The New York Knicks put together their best 48 minutes of the postseason on Saturday night in Atlanta. They neutralized Atlanta’s transition attack, owned the boards, and got a career night from Karl-Anthony Towns. The 114-98 win evened the series at two games apiece and shifted everything back to Madison Square Garden.

Now comes the hard part.

Game 5 is Tuesday night at MSG, and the Hawks are not coming quietly. Atlanta has watched New York raise its level when the moment demanded it. After Game 4, their most important player made clear that the message was received.

What Johnson Said After Game 4

Jalen Johnson did not dress up what happened on Saturday.

He acknowledged the Knicks’ response, validated what New York brought in Game 4, and turned it into a challenge for his own team heading into Tuesday.

“They were down, they knew they needed to up their intensity…They did a good job of that. Now it’s our turn to go into Game 5 and do the same thing,” Johnson said.

The Knicks responded when they needed to. Now Johnson is saying it is the Hawks’ turn.

What the Series Has Asked of Johnson

Johnson is averaging 19.5 points, 4.8 assists, and 7 rebounds across the series, respectable numbers on paper. But the efficiency and aggression have not matched what Atlanta needs from their centerpiece.

In Game 4, he finished with 14 points on 4-of-12 shooting with a minus-19 plus/minus in a game that got away from the Hawks early.

Anunoby and Hart have been physical presences throughout, and Johnson has not yet found consistent answers for either of them. McCollum has carried much of Atlanta’s offensive burden, averaging 24.5 points and doing everything he can do to keep his team afloat. Jonathan Kuminga has contributed 14.5 points per game. The pieces around Johnson have done enough.

Johnson’s quote signals he knows what the moment requires. Now MSG gets to find out if he can deliver it.

What the Knicks Bring to Game 5

New York enters Tuesday with every reason for confidence.

Jalen Brunson is healthy after his third-quarter ankle scare in Game 4, cleared with no designation on the injury report. Towns is coming off a stellar outing. The Knicks are fully healthy, at home, and coming off their sharpest performance of the series.

Johnson’s challenge is real. But so is everything New York brings to the floor on Tuesday.

Final Word for the Knicks

Johnson was honest. The Knicks responded when they needed to, and now Atlanta has to find the same gear on the road.

That is easier said than done at MSG, where the building will be at full volume and New York will have everything it needs.

Johnson has the talent to change a series. He has not done it yet in this one.

The Knicks will look to slow him down again in Game 5.
