Austin Reaves didn’t make any promises. He didn’t need to.

Standing after Tuesday’s practice, the Los Angeles Lakers star spoke in measured terms about his return from a Grade 2 oblique strain — but the tone was unmistakable.

“I feel good. … 3-1 back at home. We got a great opportunity tomorrow [to close out the series],” Reaves said.

That opportunity comes Wednesday night against the Houston Rockets, with the Lakers holding a 3-1 lead and a chance to advance. Whether Reaves is part of that effort will be determined closer to tipoff.

Austin Reaves Return Update

Reaves said the final decision remains straightforward, even if the process has not been.

“JJ specifically was like, ‘you have to be comfortable with your body and what you can do to go out there and help us be successful,” he said. “And I want to get back out there as fast as I can. But like I said, I feel good and trending in the right direction and can’t wait to wake up tomorrow and attack another day.”

There has been no set benchmark beyond that. The Lakers have kept the evaluation centered on feel, communication and risk.

“Just how my body feels,” Reaves said. “Everybody is on the same page here. The main thing is to get me back out there as fast as I can without putting myself at risk of reinjuring myself.”

It is a familiar balance in the postseason — urgency on one side, availability on the other. For Reaves, the emphasis has remained on getting it right.

Pain Tolerance, Conditioning Part of Reaves’ Approach

Reaves acknowledged that discomfort has been part of the recovery but not something he tends to dwell on.

“I’m bad at feeling pain. Just try to battle anything,” he said.

Behind the scenes, he said, the work has been about staying ready if the clearance comes.

“I’ve done everything I can to be in good condition. Be someone to go out there and be able to be on the court and try to play as seamlessly as possible.”

That preparation matters for a player coming off the most productive season of his career.

Reaves, 27, averaged 23.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.5 assists during the regular season, shooting 49 percent from the field and 36 percent from 3-point range.

Reaves Reflects on Injury, Lakers’ Response

The initial diagnosis brought frustration. That part hasn’t been hidden.

“I kinda have a feeling. Super frustrated,” Reaves said. “But obviously, our confidence has never wavered as our team.”

What followed, he said, reinforced that belief.

“The message that day forward was that they would do everything as a team to give us an opportunity and play. They’ve done exactly what they said.”

The Lakers responded by building a 3-0 lead in the series before dropping Game 4. Reaves and Luka Dončić have watched much of that from the sideline.

Lakers’ Togetherness Stands Out to Reaves

Los Angeles Lakers

GettyLos Angeles Lakers celebrate Luke Kennard’s game-winning three-pointer in Orlando during the regular season.

From that vantage point, Reaves said the group’s identity has been clear.

“It’s a lot of fun to see the determination, the togetherness and just the joy of them playing together, competing for every single possession,” he said. “Me and Luka talk about that every time — just watching how hard they’re playing, the attention to detail and the togetherness.”

Those are the elements the Lakers will lean on again in Game 5, with or without him.

Game 5 Stakes Set

Game 5 is scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 at 7:00 PM PT (10:00 PM ET) on ESPN. The Lakers, up 3-1, can close out the series at home.

According to ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, Reaves is optimistic about returning but will still be a game-time decision for the third straight contest.

Reaves kept it simpler.

His body will dictate when he’s ready.

By Wednesday night, that answer will decide whether he’s back on the floor — or still watching a team that has already put itself in position to move on.
