Steve Kerr, Golden State Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are still waiting on a final answer from Steve Kerr. The 60-year-old head coach has already met once with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy, but the two sides plan to meet again before a final decision is reached. For weeks, the prevailing sentiment around the league leaned toward a Kerr exit.

That sentiment appears to be shifting.

On Wednesday, Kerr was spotted at a San Francisco Giants game at Oracle Park, attending alongside longtime friend and Athletic journalist Mike Silver. It was a casual public appearance, but in the context of an offseason filled with uncertainty, it caught attention.

What Kerr’s Public Appearance Could Signal

Reading too much into a baseball game attendance is always a risk. Kerr lives in the Bay Area, has longtime friends there, and had plenty of reason to be at Oracle Park on a Wednesday afternoon. There are plenty of innocent explanations.

But the optics matter. Oracle Park sits just minutes from Chase Center, the Warriors’ home arena. Showing up publicly in the Bay Area, relaxed and attending a game with a close friend, does not paint the picture of someone preparing to walk away from the city and the job he has held for 12 seasons.

It is not confirmation of anything. But it is a data point worth noting alongside everything else that has emerged in recent days.

What the Latest Reporting Suggests

The broader reporting picture has also shifted. NBA insider Marc Stein reported recently that Golden State has been operating internally as though it is “more likely than not that a common ground can be found” with Kerr heading into their upcoming conversations.

That is a meaningful development. The immediate aftermath of the Warriors’ season-ending loss felt heavy with finality, and several people close to the situation, including Draymond Green, suggested they expected Kerr to move on. Green has since reversed that stance and now believes Kerr will likely return.

Nothing is settled yet. A new contract still needs to be negotiated, and reports suggest the Warriors are pushing for a multi-year deal rather than a one-year arrangement built on nostalgia. The NBA Draft lottery also adds another variable. A top pick could shift both sides’ thinking about the direction of the franchise and whether Kerr is the right fit for whatever comes next.

Final Word for the Warriors

The Giants game may mean nothing. Or it may mean everything. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

What is clear is that the mood around Kerr’s return has changed. The reporting has shifted. Green has changed his mind. And Kerr is out at baseball games in San Francisco looking perfectly comfortable.

The meeting with Lacob and Dunleavy will settle it. Until then, the signs are pointing in one direction.
