NEW YORK, NEW YORK - NOVEMBER 05: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves warms up before the game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on November 05, 2025 in New York City.

NBA superstar Anthony Edwards is currently sidelined for the Minnesota Timberwolves with a bone bruise and hyperextension in his left knee, and heading into their second-round playoff series against the San Antonio Spurs, a potential injury return remains unknown.

Edwards suffered the knee injury in the Timberwolves’ first-round matchup against the Denver Nuggets, and while he avoided any serious ligament damage, he is expected to be out for at least a bit longer as he hopes to make a full recovery.

But despite the fact that Edwards remains without an official return date or timeline, the latest update on his injury status for the Timberwolves vs Spurs playoff series bodes well for Minnesota potentially getting back their franchise centerpiece in hopes of forcing another upset in the postseason.

Anthony Edwards Injury Return: Timberwolves Get Great News With Latest Update

According to Shams Charania, Edwards, who suffered his knee injury on April 25, will miss at least two weeks. That would put a return date closer to the middle of the Timberwolves’ second-round series against the Spurs, but right now, an official timeline remains uncertain.

.@ShamsCharania says Anthony Edwards will be OUT to start the second-round series vs. the Spurs 🏀

“I’m told Anthony Edwards will be out to start the second round series,” Charania said on ESPN’s Get Up show. “This is a multi-week, minimum two week injury, so you’re looking at a few games before you hope (Edwards can return).”

However, while Edwards is in the midst of his injury recovery, the star reportedly said that he plans on returning at some point in the second round.

“Edwards has been doing around-the-clock treatment on his injured left knee, and he has told teammates he plans on returning at some point in the series, team sources told The Athletic,” Timberwolves writer Jon Krawczynski reported.

Edwards’ injury claim is good news for a Timberwolves team that is dealing with several big health concerns at this point in the postseason. Though it remains to be seen when he will be able to return, Minnesota being able to get its star back healthy would greatly improve its chances against the Spurs.

Still, according to head coach Chris Finch, he has no official update on Edwards, describing him as ‘week-to-week.’

Here’s Chris Finch when asked about the health of Anthony Edwards and Ayo Dosunmu.

Dosunmu participated in practice, but “just the light stuff”.

“Ant is still week-to-week, so I haven’t had any update on that,” Finch said over the weekend. “I really don’t know. So obviously, nothing out of the gate with him.”

ESPN.com has an estimated Edwards injury return date set for May 9, which would be roughly two weeks after he originally suffered his bone bruise and hyperextension, but for now, the Timberwolves getting their star player back for the second round remains to be seen.

Timberwolves Injury Report Heading Into Playoff Series Vs Spurs

GettySAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA – MAY 12: Donte DiVincenzo #0 of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Anthony Edwards #5 shake hands against the Golden State Warriors during the second quarter in Game Four of the Western Conference Second Round NBA Playoffs at Chase Center on May 12, 2025 in San Francisco, California.

Edwards highlights Minnesota’s injury report after their first-round win over the Nuggets, but he isn’t alone, as he’s one of a few of their key players currently dealing with a big health concern.

The other most notable player that the Timberwolves will miss is Donte DiVincenzo, who suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the same game Edwards went down in. He will miss the rest of this season and potentially all of next year, but he did undergo surgery by the same doctor who repaired Jayson Tatum‘s Achilles.

In place of Edwards and DiVincenzo, Ayo Dosunmu had stepped up as Minnesota’s lead guard, but the trade deadline acquisition is also dealing with an injury of his own, as he missed the Timberwolves’ close-out win over Denver.

The Timberwolves won the clincher against Denver without Ayo Dosunmu (21.8 PPG this series), Anthony Edwards (18.5) and Donte DiVincenzo (10.8).

They are the first team in NBA history to win a playoff game while missing 3 or more players who averaged 10+ PPG in that series 🔥

Dosunmu is officially on the injury report, dealing with right calf soreness. According to Finch, he did some light work in practice and is day-to-day, but his injury status against San Antonio remains up in the air.

Minnesota also saw Kyle Anderson be added to the injury report, as he is day-to-day while he faces an illness.

Until the Timberwolves either announce injury updates or return timelines for any of those key players, specifically Edwards and Dosunmu, contributors like Mike Conley, Jaden McDaniels, Julius Randle, Naz Reid, and Rudy Gobert, all of whom had strong outings in the first round against the Nuggets, will take on larger scoring roles for the time being.

Western Conference Semifinals schedule: San Antonio Spurs vs. Minnesota Timberwolves ⬇️

The Timberwolves vs Spurs second-round playoff series will start with Game 1 on Monday, May 4, and until new Edwards injury return news emerges, he will start the series out, but has hope on coming back at some point, especially if Minnesota can recapture the magic they had against Denver, and potentially extend the matchup against a dominant San Antonio team.
