Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo got some interesting news as his name gets thrown around wildly in trade rumors.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks got clarity from the NBA on one issue, but not the one that will define their offseason.

The NBA concluded its investigation into the Bucks’ late-season shutdown of Antetokounmpo and determined that no further action was warranted, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on May 12. The decision comes as Antetokounmpo’s future in Milwaukee has become one of the league’s biggest offseason storylines, with ESPN also reporting that the Bucks are “open for business” on trade calls and offers for the two-time MVP.

That makes the NBA’s decision more than a footnote. It removes a potential disciplinary cloud over the Bucks while keeping the larger question intact: whether Milwaukee will extend its franchise player or move him before the NBA draft.

The NBA Concluded the Milwaukee Bucks Will Face No Penalties for Shutting Down Giannis Antetokounmpo

The league’s investigation centered on the disconnect between Antetokounmpo’s public comments and the Bucks’ explanation for why he did not return after hyperextending his left knee on March 15.

Antetokounmpo said multiple times that he believed he was healthy enough to play before the season ended. Milwaukee, according to ESPN, told the league that it did not believe Antetokounmpo actually wanted to return and pointed to return-to-play protocol issues involving 3-on-3 work.

The league’s no-action decision does not necessarily repair the relationship. It only closes the investigation. That distinction matters because ESPN reported on May 11 that Milwaukee is listening to trade calls and that team officials expect a strong market for Antetokounmpo. ESPN reported the Bucks are seeking “a young blue-chip talent and/or a surplus of draft picks” in any potential deal.

The timeline is also tightening. Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam said a decision would come before the June 23-24 draft on whether Antetokounmpo signs a max contract or plays somewhere else, per ESPN.

That is why the rumors have accelerated, especially around the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors. This is not just offseason speculation around a disgruntled star. It is a possible franchise reset involving a 31-year-old former MVP who can shape his market because he is not locked into a long-term deal.

Giannis to Lakers Trade Has Become a Popular Rumor

The Los Angeles Lakers are an obvious rumor destination because of Luka Doncic, the franchise’s star power and the annual expectation that they will chase elite talent.

Lakers Nation, citing Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic, reported that the Lakers are expected to explore Antetokounmpo trade scenarios this summer. ESPN also listed the Lakers among the teams that pursued Antetokounmpo at the February deadline.

The basketball fit is easy to understand. A Doncic-Antetokounmpo pairing would give Los Angeles one of the league’s most imposing offensive combinations: Doncic as the half-court creator and Antetokounmpo as a downhill finisher, transition force and defensive anchor.

The problem is the trade math.

Lakers Nation noted that Los Angeles may not have the same young-player-and-pick package as other suitors, with Austin Reaves standing out as one of the Lakers’ best assets. The outlet also reported that the Lakers want to keep Reaves, complicating any realistic path to a Bucks deal.

There is also the Giannis side of the equation. ESPN reported that rival executives believe Antetokounmpo’s preferred destination will be a major factor because he can influence whether a team is comfortable paying a massive price for him without long-term assurance.

Giannis to Celtics Trade Also Has Traction

The Boston Celtics are another team drawing trade speculation, and the reason is straightforward: they have the kind of high-end player who could headline a real offer.

ESPN reported that the Celtics were among the teams that pursued Antetokounmpo at the February deadline.

A Celtics deal would almost certainly lead to questions about Jaylen Brown. CelticsBlog framed that debate directly in a May 12 staff roundtable asking whether Boston should trade Brown for Antetokounmpo, with writers split on the idea. Some argued that a Giannis-Jayson Tatum pairing could raise Boston’s ceiling, while others pointed to Brown’s chemistry with Tatum, franchise loyalty concerns, Giannis’ health and the risk of taking on another massive contract.

That is the tension for Boston. Antetokounmpo would give the Celtics a level of rim pressure and interior force they have often tried to manufacture through spacing and matchup advantages. But acquiring him would likely mean breaking up a core that has already won at the highest level.

It also would require confidence that Antetokounmpo wants to stay. ESPN reported he is eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on October 1 if he remains with Milwaukee, or six months after a trade if he lands with a new team.

For Boston, that makes this more than a basketball decision. It would be a culture, cost and timeline decision.

Giannis’ Elite Production is Why Teams Want to Trade

Antetokounmpo is 31 years old, listed at 6-foot-11 and 243 pounds, and was the No. 15 pick in the 2013 NBA draft by the Bucks. He is from Greece and has spent his entire NBA career in Milwaukee.

Even in an injury-affected season, his production remained elite. Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists in 36 games during the 2025-26 season.

His résumé explains why the trade market could become enormous. Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year, a 2021 NBA champion and Finals MVP, and one of the defining players in Bucks history.

His contract explains why this summer could become decisive. Spotrac lists Antetokounmpo with a $58.45 million salary for 2026-27 and a $62.78 million player option for 2027-28.

That gives Antetokounmpo leverage and gives the Bucks urgency. The NBA’s investigation is over. The Giannis trade watch is not.
