eBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers gear up to play what could be their final game of the 2025-26 NBA season.

The Lakers are back in Los Angeles to play the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals, where they trail 0-3 and are in danger of being swept.

This second round contest has been thoroughly dominated by the Thunder, who won the first three games of the series by an average margin of roughly 19 points.

The Lakers have had no answers for the Thunder’s rich depth and have struggled to keep pace with the defending NBA champions in second halves. L.A. even led Oklahoma City entering halftime in two of the three games.

With the finality associated with 0-3 deficit entering a Game 4, James, again, is in focus. Many are asking if Monday night could be James’ final NBA game. There has been speculation over James’ retirement for multiple years.

James, 41, is close to finishing a record 23rd NBA season. He achieved his wish of playing with his son, Bronny James, who was drafted at the end of the second round in the 2024 NBA Draft. But perhaps the league’s all-time leading scorer isn’t ready quite yet to call it a career.

His younger son, Bryce James, is pacing for the NBA, leading many to believe the elder James wants to play until his other son receives the opportunity to be drafted.

But James hasn’t publicly expressed what’s on his mind regarding when he’ll decide to retire. The speculation continues.

Popular Insider Answers if Tonight Will be LeBron James’ Last Game

Considering how dominant the Thunder have been this postseason — they are 7-0 in the playoffs entering Monday’s Game 4 — it can legitimately be asked if James is on the verge of his final NBA game.

James is the oldest player in the NBA and is one of just three active players standing from any NBA Draft before 2007.

Although he’s past his apex, James’ continues to be a longevity marvel. In his 23rd season, he averaged better than 20 points on close to 52% shooting the field while operating as the third option on the Lakers for much of the season.

With injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, James ripped off numerous turn-back-the-clock type of moments this postseason. He led all scorers in the Lakers’ first round victory over the Houston Rockets.

But with the Lakers’ season on the line tonight, the NBA world is potentially just hours away from watching James play his final game.

Appearing on Monday’s “SportsCenter,” long-time NBA insider Brian Windhorst, who has followed LeBron James since his high school days, discussed whether he believes tonight could be the 41-year-old Lakers star’s final hurrah.

“I think we’re have to honor that he’s gonna have to go through a process after the season,” Windhorst. “I do not expect there to be an announcement of any finality after this game, if indeed the Lakers lose and end their season.”

What’s Next for L.A.?

The Lakers will have some sorting out to do with James this offseason.

The 41-year-old star will enter unrestricted free agency in July, marking the first time in his career James won’t be under contract for the following season entering the offseason.

Plenty has been debated over what James may decide to do. Some have pointed to retirement, other believe James could return to the Cleveland Cavaliers to end his career with the franchise that drafted him No. 1 overall in 2003.

The Lakers could claw their way to victory tonight, delaying major speculation on James’ next move a little longer. But if the season ends tonight, James’ next decision will be under great focus for the fourth year in a row.
