The Miami Heat missed the playoffs this season after failing to advance out of the play-in. They haven’t won a playoff series since the 2022-23 season, when they made the NBA Finals. During that season, they fell to the Denver Nuggets in five games.

Since then, the Heat have changed a lot of their personnel. Pat Riley has remained a constant in the front office, even at the age of 81. He continues to make all of the decisions for the organization, although there have been rumors that he is considering retirement.

Riley went ahead and addressed his future during an end-of-the-season press conference. He made it clear he’s not going anywhere.

Pat Riley Says He Will Not Step Down From the Miami Heat

Riley started out the press conference by making it clear that he will be staying with the Miami Heat.

“I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign. I’m not going to step aside. When I came here almost 31 years ago, I have the same attitude that I had in that press conference on the Imagination … I want another parade down Biscayne Boulevard.”

Despite the relative lack of success in the postseason over the last few years, Riley thinks he can re-tool the roster and get back into title contention. He explained what his plan is going to be for the team moving forward.

“I’m not going to change. I’m not going to try to lose. I’m not going to tank.”

Miami is currently stuck in the middle of the NBA, which is the worst possible place to be. Changes to the NBA draft lottery might help them if they don’t make the playoffs, but it’s unclear what those changes are going to be at this point.

The Heat Have a Track Record of Success Under Pat Riley

It’s impossible to ignore the success that Riley has had with Miami. He coached the Heat to a championship in 2006 and helped build title teams in both 2012 and 2013. After LeBron James left Miami, Riley helped orchestrate two more teams that made the NBA Finals.

Moving forward, it will be hard for the Miami Heat to add superstars. They have a few assets to trade, but unless they get some lottery luck, they don’t have any premier draft assets. The current roster is fairly old, as well. That will make it hard for them to compete for titles.

Right now, the Heat are likely formulating a plan to trade for a superstar this offseason. Giannis Antetokounmpo will likely be at the top of their list, although there is no guarantee they will win a bidding war for him. They might not have the draft assets to land him from the Bucks.

Riley is not slowing down, and he still believes that he can win another championship while he is with the Heat.
