LeBron James revealed what the Lakers must do to beat the Thunder and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in Round 2

The Los Angeles Lakers are headed to the Western Conference semifinals after closing out the Houston Rockets in six games.

Following a 98-78 win in Game 6, the No. 4-seeded Lakers advanced to face the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder, who swept the Phoenix Suns in the first round. The matchup presents a significant step up in competition for Los Angeles, which won a series for the first time since 2023 despite playing without Luka Doncic and with Austin Reaves limited to availability.

LeBron James, who led the Lakers with 28 points in the closeout win, addressed the upcoming challenge and outlined the key areas his team must focus on against Oklahoma City. The Thunder enter the series as the defending champions and one of the most complete teams in the league, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

James emphasized ball security as a priority against Oklahoma City’s defense.

“Obviously we’re playing against the defending champion,” James said. “So like my early scout, obviously we’ll get into it in a couple of days. But obviously it’s the defending champ. It’s one thing you have to do. You have to protect the ball versus those guys. They play physical handsy defense. And if you allow them to get a lot of pick sixes, it just ignites their home court. It ignites their team.”

He also pointed to Gilgeous-Alexander as the focal point of the Thunder’s attack.

“And obviously we know the head of the snake. A possible back-to-back MVP for Shai,” James said. “So we will scout them. But they’re a really full-equipped team. It’s not just Shai. Obviously, we know he’s the head honcho. But it trickles out to everybody in that star lineup and to the bench.”

James added that the Lakers understand the scope of the challenge ahead.

“So we have a full play once again. But we’re ready for the challenge.”

Oklahoma City’s defensive pressure and depth were evident throughout the regular season, where the Thunder swept all four meetings against the Lakers, often by wide margins. Their ability to force turnovers and convert them into fast-break points has been a defining trait.

The Lakers enter the second round after overcoming significant roster challenges.

They eliminated Houston without Doncic, who remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, and with Reaves returning only for the final two games of the series. Role players such as Rui Hachimura, Marcus Smart, and Deandre Ayton played key roles, while James took on increased responsibility offensively.

However, the Thunder present a different level of difficulty.

Oklahoma City features a balanced roster with multiple scoring options, including Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, and Ajay Mitchell. The team’s depth extends to the bench, allowing it to maintain intensity on both ends of the floor.

The Thunder also demonstrated consistency during the regular season and postseason. They secured the No. 1 seed and completed a first-round sweep, demonstrating offensive efficiency and defensive discipline.

For the Lakers, limiting turnovers and maintaining offensive structure will be critical. Houston exposed vulnerabilities in those areas during Games 4 and 5 of the first-round series, forcing turnovers and disrupting rhythm. Oklahoma City’s ability to capitalize on mistakes could amplify those issues.

The Lakers will also need improved health and production from their roster. Doncic’s status remains uncertain, while Reaves is still regaining form after a multi-week absence. Their availability could impact Los Angeles’ offensive balance against a strong defensive opponent.

Game 1 of the series is set to take place in Oklahoma City, where the Thunder will have home-court advantage. The compressed playoff schedule will give both teams limited time to prepare between games.

James acknowledged the challenge but made clear the Lakers are prepared to compete.
