Bulls Get Major Update on Austin Reaves — And It Could Shift Their Offseason

Austin Reaves driving against Josh Giddey in Lakers vs Bulls game

Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves drives past Chicago Bulls guard Josh Giddey during a regular-season game, highlighting the type of playmaking and scoring Chicago could target in free agency.

The Chicago Bulls’ hopes of landing one of the top guards in free agency may already be facing a harsh reality — and it goes beyond money.

According to Dan Woike and Sam Amick of The Athletic, winning is expected to be a major factor in Austin Reaves’ decision this offseason, a development that could work against a Bulls team still in transition.

“League sources say winning will be a significant factor in Reaves’ thinking,” Woike and Amick reported.

For Chicago, that signal lands at a difficult time.

Winning Priority Undercuts Bulls’ Biggest Advantage

On paper, the Bulls should be one of the most aggressive teams in the market.

They are projected to have up to $54 million in cap space, the most in the league, per ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks. That financial flexibility puts them in a position to pursue a player like Reaves, who is widely expected to decline his $14.8 million player option and enter unrestricted free agency.

Rival executives believe Reaves could command around $40 million annually, with the Los Angeles Lakers able to offer a five-year, $241 million deal, according to Woike and Amick.

But the Bulls’ edge in spending power may not matter if Reaves prioritizes contention.

Bulls’ Timeline Creates Major Obstacle

Marks’ broader outlook on Chicago’s offseason reinforces the challenge.

New executive vice president Bryson Graham is expected to take a patient, long-term approach, focusing on building a sustainable roster rather than accelerating into win-now mode. The Bulls have a young core that includes Josh Giddey, Tre Jones, Matas Buzelis and Noa Essengue, who missed most of last season after shoulder surgery.

They also hold the No. 4 pick in a strong draft, the No. 15 selection from Portland, and are the only team with two top-15 selections.

That flexibility is valuable, but it also signals where the franchise stands.

Chicago is still shaping its identity, not finishing it.

And that distinction matters for a player like Reaves entering his prime.

Fit Is Clear — But Timing Works Against Chicago

From a basketball standpoint, the Bulls check multiple boxes.

Reaves would immediately address Chicago’s need for elite perimeter scoring and playmaking, especially after the team’s post-deadline offensive drop. He averaged 23.3 points, 5.5 assists and 4.7 rebounds this season while shooting 36% from three.

But as Marks noted, Chicago must be careful about long-term commitments that could limit future flexibility.

That caution could make it harder to compete with teams offering both money and a clearer path to winning.

Lakers’ Stability Adds Pressure

Meanwhile, the Lakers offer something Chicago currently cannot. They are coming off back-to-back 50-win seasons and appear closer to contending than the Bulls.

League sources told Woike and Amick that Luka Dončić has expressed a strong desire to continue playing with Reaves, viewing him as a key piece moving forward. That belief underscores Los Angeles’ intent to build a contender around Dončić — with Reaves as part of that core.

For a free agent weighing options, that level of stability and competitiveness carries significant weight.

Reaves Keeps Options Open — But Trend Is Clear

Reaves has remained non-committal publicly.

“I take life day-by-day,” Reaves said after the Lakers’ playoff exit. “I’m just blessed to have an opportunity to play for this organization.”

Still, the direction of league sentiment is becoming clearer.

What It Means for Bulls

The Bulls have the money. They have the picks. They have flexibility.

What they may not have — at least not yet — is the winning environment Reaves appears to value.

And in a free agency cycle where fit, timing and trajectory matter as much as salary, that could prove decisive.

For Chicago, it’s an early reminder that cap space alone doesn’t guarantee a breakthrough.
