Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards suffered a knee injury in the final minutes of the first half of Game 4 against the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night.

Edwards, 24, sprung up to contest Cam Johnson’s layup. Replay showed the Wolves star landing awkwardly on his left leg. 

Edwards crumbled to the floor and stayed down holding his knee as the air went out of Target Center. It was clear he was in severe pain. 

The 24-year-old Minnesota star was already dealing with right knee inflammation that started to plague him in the final weeks of the regular season.

Edwards appeared on the injury report ahead of all four games in this series. While Edwards and the Minnesota coaching staff continued to maintain Edwards was not hurt, the star guard’s play in the first three games indicated the opposite.

The Wolves are now hoping for the best-case scenario on Edwards’ injury. In the meantime, they look to advance to the Western Conference semifinals after taking a commanding 3-1 with a win last night.

Doctor Gives Offers Encouraging Update on Anthony Edwards 

There’s no denying Edwards’ injury looked back. From how he landed to how he bunched up in pain on the floor, it would be stunning if Edwards played again in this series. 

But that perhaps doesn’t rule out the possibility of him playing again this postseason. Of course, Minnesota will need to be extra cautious with Edwards because of the knee injury he was already dealing with, but the longer the Wolves’ season goes on the better chances Edwards returns.

According to Brian Sutterer, Edwards’ injury could be as severe as a torn ACL or extreme hyperextension, but it could also be something that sidelines him on a week-to-week basis. 

“We absolutely have to be concerned for the possibility that this could be an ACL tear,” Sutterer said in a YouTube video, “but I am telling you these are very hard to predict from just looking at the footage. This is not something where I would say, looking at the replay, ‘Goodness, this is absolutely an ACL.’ I don’t think you can say that.” 

Added Sutterer: “This looks concerning for the flat-out severity of likely bone contusion, keeping him out probably best-case scenario a couple [of] weeks. … I don’t think this is something he’ll bounce back from. I think the hope is just that this isn’t more serious like an ACL, something that could affect him into next season.” 

Timberwolves Must Prepare to Be Without Their Star For Now

Whether Edwards dodged a major bullet remains to be seen, but it certainly appears the All-Star guard won’t be back in the first round against the Nuggets considering the series has already gone through four games. 

Minnesota is holding out hope that Edwards’ injury falls on the minor end, something like a less severe hyperextension or bruising. 

In case of a hyperextension, it is interesting to note the time Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo suffered a hyperextended knee in the playoffs before returning to lead his team to the championship. 

Of course, Antetokounmpo’s injury and Edwards’ injury could be entirely different. Any discourse on Edwards’ injury is merely speculation until the Wolves star receives an MRI.

Meanwhile, the Wolves are headed back to Denver with an opportunity to close out the first round series in five games. They’ll almost certainly be without Edwards.
