The NBA has fined Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown $50,000 after his post-elimination Twitch stream included pointed criticism of the officiating from the Celtics’ first-round playoff loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
The league announced the punishment on May 5, citing Brown’s “public criticism of the officiating.” The fine came two days after Brown’s May 3 livestream, which followed Boston’s 109-100 Game 7 loss to Philadelphia at TD Garden.
Brown’s comments came after one of the most painful Celtics playoff exits in recent memory: Boston lost three straight games after taking a 3-1 series lead, ending its season in the first round despite holding home-court advantage.
Brown did not simply complain about one call. He accused officials of targeting him because of his reputation and past criticism, saying on Twitch that they “clearly had an agenda,” according to Reuters. Brown also said Philadelphia “took advantage of the officiating” during the series.

The NBA’s punishment followed Brown’s extended remarks about how he was officiated against the 76ers, particularly on offensive fouls.
Brown was called for 10 offensive fouls during the first round, more than twice as many as the next-highest player, according to Reuters and Heavy’s previous reporting. During the regular season, Brown ranked second in the NBA with 40 offensive fouls in 71 games.
That context matters because Brown’s frustration was not random. His complaint centered on whether officials were calling his off-arm contact more tightly than they were calling similar moves from other ball-handlers and wings around the league.
Brown specifically mentioned 76ers forward Paul George and New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson as players who use similar moves, arguing that his own drives were being singled out. “It’s a basketball play,” Brown said, according to Reuters.
The league, however, has typically punished public criticism of officials, and Brown’s accusation went beyond arguing that a whistle was wrong. He suggested motive. That is the part that likely pushed the matter into a higher-dollar fine.
Heavy previously reported that Brown had already been fined $35,000 in January for criticizing officials and quoted an NBA executive who expected the league to respond strongly after the Twitch stream. The $50,000 fine confirms the league viewed this as more serious than a standard officiating complaint.
The timing of Brown’s comments also shaped the reaction.
Boston’s season ended with a Game 7 home loss to Philadelphia, 109-100, after the Celtics had led the series 3-1. Brown scored 33 points in Game 7, but the Celtics dropped the final three games and were eliminated in the first round.
Brown’s individual production was not the main issue. He averaged 25.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.3 assists in the seven-game series. He was also carrying a larger burden with Jayson Tatum injured and unavailable.
Brown is not just any frustrated player. He is a five-time All-Star and the 2024 NBA Finals MVP. With Tatum’s health and the roster’s future already major offseason questions, Brown’s voice carries extra weight inside and outside the organization.
The fine will not affect Boston’s cap sheet in any meaningful way. It also will not change the result of the series. But it does extend the conversation around a Celtics exit that was already difficult to process.
