Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant shared a series of emotional Instagram posts on Tuesday following the death of teammate Brandon Clarke, who died at age 29 after a reported medical emergency.

Authorities told NBC4 that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a 911 call shortly after 5 p.m. Monday. Clarke was pronounced dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing, and an autopsy will determine the official cause of death.

Morant reacted hours later on social media, posting photos and videos honoring Clarke, including one message that read: “this hurt BC 💔 love you broski. gone way too soon.”

Morant, who has often spoken about the importance of team chemistry in Memphis, appeared to emphasize that connection in his posts, which resonated across the league as players and fans responded with condolences.

Several current and former NBA players shared Morant’s messages or posted their own tributes, reflecting Clarke’s reputation as one of the league’s most well-liked teammates.

Brandon Clarke’s NBA Career and Grizzlies Impact

Clarke spent his entire NBA career with Memphis after being selected No. 21 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Gonzaga. He earned NBA All-Rookie honors and quickly became a key rotation player.

Over six seasons, Clarke averaged 10.3 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooting over 60% from the field. He signed a four-year, $50 million contract extension in 2022.

Injuries limited his availability in recent seasons, including a torn Achilles in 2023-24. He appeared in limited action this past season due to calf and knee issues.

Despite those setbacks, Clarke remained an important presence for the Grizzlies, valued for his energy, efficiency and leadership within the locker room.

The Grizzlies said in a statement they were “heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” calling him “an outstanding teammate and an even better person.”

NBA commissioner Adam Silver also released a statement, saying Clarke “played the game with enormous passion and grit.”

Brandon Clarke Death Investigation Ongoing

Clarke’s death comes weeks after an arrest in Arkansas involving multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance. Authorities have not linked that incident to his death, and officials have not announced a cause.

Law enforcement officials said drug paraphernalia was found at the residence, though they have not confirmed whether it played a role in the incident.

As the investigation continues, tributes from across the NBA have poured in, with Morant’s posts among the most widely shared.

In one final message, Morant wrote: “Check on yours. bring ’em closer.”
