LaMelo Ball gets fined for Bam Adebayo incident

The NBA has taken disciplinary action following a controversial Play-In Tournament incident involving LaMelo Ball and Bam Adebayo. The league fined Ball a total of $60,000 and upgraded the play to a flagrant foul after reviewing the sequence that led to Adebayo’s injury.

The incident occurred during the second quarter of Tuesday night’s Play-In game between the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets. As Adebayo attempted to save a loose ball near the sideline, Ball, who had fallen on a drive, made contact with Adebayo’s leg. The Heat center lost his balance and landed hard on his lower back, forcing him to exit the game and not return.

According to Shams Charania, “The NBA is fining Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball $35,000 for his trip of Miami’s Bam Adebayo and upgrading the action to a Flagrant, plus fining him $25,000 for cursing postgame, sources tell ESPN. $60K in fines, Flagrant. No suspension.

The decision comes after initial confusion during the game, when no foul was called, and the play was not reviewed in real time. Crew chief Zach Zarba explained postgame that the review window had closed because play continued without a whistle. The league’s postgame evaluation ultimately determined that the action warranted further discipline, though it stopped short of a suspension.

The sequence quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the Play-In Tournament. Adebayo remained on the floor briefly after the fall before walking to the locker room under his own power. The Heat later ruled him out with a lower back injury, leaving Miami without its captain in a win-or-go-home scenario.

Ball addressed the play after the game and apologized. “I apologize on that one,” he said. “I got hit in the head and didn’t really know where I was, but I’m going to check on him to see if he’s OK and everything.” He also stated he had not seen a replay and described the moment as part of a fast-moving play.

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra strongly disagreed with how the situation was handled during the game. He called the play “dangerous” and said, “He should have been thrown out of the game for that.” Spoelstra emphasized that actions involving tripping or grabbing a player’s legs have no place in the game.

The NBA’s ruling addressed both aspects of the situation: the on-court contact and Ball’s conduct afterward. While the flagrant upgrade confirms the league viewed the play as excessive, the absence of a suspension indicates it did not meet the threshold for further in-game discipline beyond fines.

The impact of the incident extended beyond discipline, as the game result ended Miami’s season. The Hornets secured a 127-126 overtime win, eliminating the Heat from playoff contention. Without Adebayo, Miami lost a key presence on both ends of the floor in a tightly contested game.

Adebayo had been a central figure for Miami throughout the season, averaging 20.1 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.2 assists. His absence was felt immediately, particularly in defensive coverage and interior scoring. Teammates attempted to adjust, but the Heat ultimately fell short in overtime.

Ball, meanwhile, finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, including the go-ahead layup late in overtime that sealed the win. Despite the controversy, his performance helped keep Charlotte’s postseason hopes alive.

The Hornets now move on to face the loser of the matchup between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic for a chance to claim the No. 8 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The league’s decision closes the immediate disciplinary process, but the play has sparked continued discussion around player safety and officiating protocols in high-stakes games.
