Joel Embiid looks on during a Philadelphia 76ers game. Embiid has been ruled out for Game 2 vs. the Boston Celtics as he recovers from an emergency appendectomy.

Joel Embiid’s name on an injury report is nothing new, but the stakes around it feel different when the opponent is the New York Knicks and a deep Philadelphia 76ers run is on the line.

With the big man frequently listed as questionable and upgraded late, every update becomes part injury drama, part psychological warfare in a rivalry that has only grown nastier over the past few seasons.

On TV, that storyline was distilled perfectly when Jay Williams opened a segment by saying, “When people are like, well, you know, he’s battling back from injury… when isn’t Joel Embiid battling back from injury?”

“When isn’t Joel Embiid battling back from injury? … This is the moment that Joel Embiid has been waiting for since 2014 to get the job done.”

That line captured what the league has watched for a decade: Embiid’s dominance and fragility existing side by side, especially when the lights are brightest.

Joel Embiid, The Process, And A No‑Excuses Sixers Core

Williams then pivoted from sarcasm to expectation, pointing out that the same “if healthy” argument often used for the Knicks now fully applies to the Sixers.

He referenced how “all the steps in the process have led to this result,” framing this version of Philadelphia with Tyrese Maxey “playing his a** off” and young talent like VJ Edgecombe emerging as the payoff for years of patience.

He highlighted Embiid’s ceiling by noting how he once fouled Karl-Anthony Towns out in 16 minutes and acknowledged all the talk about him being “one of the greatest bigs to ever do it,” calling the skill set “incredible.”

At the same time, Williams couldn’t resist a jab at Embiid’s “Premier League soccer” theatrics, criticizing the flopping and dramatics even as he insisted this is “the moment that Joel Embiid has been waiting for since 2014 to get the job done. This is it.” That’s both respect and a challenge in one breath.

For Philly, the context matters. Embiid has missed key Knicks games in recent seasons due to knee issues and procedures, with stretches where he was ruled out for weeks and others where he was only “questionable” right up until tip.

Yet in recent meetings when he has been on the floor, he has controlled the paint, putting up big scoring and rebounding lines while drawing endless whistle attention and setting the emotional tone of the matchup.

How The Knicks Can Still Make Joel Embiid And The 76ers Sweat

Karl-Anthony Towns

GettyKnicks have various ways to shut down Philadelphia 76ers.

The Knicks have been pretty creative in turning Embiid’s health and conditioning against the Sixers by speeding the game up, focusing the offense on the non-Embiid players, and making him do heavy work when his legs start to get tired late in the game.

When Embiid is either resting or visibly hampered, New York’s physicality on the glass and their relentless guard play can change the game in just a few possessions.

So the reason why Embiid’s injury report is more than just a health update is because it doubles as a strategy. For instance, if he’s only just fit to play, the Knicks would try to get him involved in numerous pick-and-rolls, force him to move around the court a lot, and leave the Sixers’ other players to fend for themselves without their superstar.

On the other hand, if he is almost back to full strength, his talent to completely overpower inside, master the game, and influence the whole series, makes him the number-one cause for a change in the rivalry which seems to be getting more and more explosive with each ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌year.
