For the second offseason in a row, the Philadelphia 76ers are going to wonder about their future with the veteran guard, Quentin Grimes.

Last year, Grimes was going into the new league year with a chance to hit the free agency market as a restricted player. The Sixers had the opportunity to match any offer sheet, but Grimes didn’t sign anything.

Based on reporting throughout the offseason, the veteran wanted a lot more than what the market was willing to give him.

The 76ers played their cards right and didn’t jump to make any notable deals while the demand wasn’t there. Grimes returned to the Sixers on a qualifying offer. The deal was worth $8.7 million for the 2025-2026 season.

When reporters attempted to get some thoughts from Grimes heading into this summer’s free agency period, the veteran wasn’t giving the public anything immediately after the Sixers’ 2026 playoff run.

Grimes wrapped up his rookie deal with the 76ers last year. After his stints at Kansas and Houston in the NCAA, Grimes was the 25th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He started his career with the New York Knicks.

During the 2023-2024 NBA season, the Knicks traded Grimes to the Detroit Pistons. Ahead of the 2024-2025 season, the Pistons traded Grimes to the Dallas Mavericks. The Sixers picked up Grimes from the Mavericks ahead of the 2025 deadline.

In his first full season with the 76ers, Grimes appeared in 75 games. He had just 19 starts. Seeing the court for 29.4 minutes per game, Grimes averaged 13.4 points. He shot 45.0% from the field and hit on 33.4% of his threes. Grimes also came down with 3.6 rebounds per game and averaged 3.3 assists.

The 76ers won’t be looking to break the bank on Grimes. If they didn’t do it after an All-Star caliber stretch in 28 games during the 2024-2025 season, then they surely won’t after a “solid” run as a reserve.

The early comments from Grimes don’t give away any plans for July.
