Franz Wagner will not play in the Magic-Pistons game and his status for the next round is in doubt.

Franz Wagner will not play in the Orlando Magic’s pivotal Game 7 against the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, May 3. Wagner’s injury status remains in doubt even if the Magic are able to pull off the upset in Detroit and advance to the next round.

Wagner is dealing with a calf injury and is set to miss his third straight game against the Pistons. The challenge for fans is Orlando has provided little in the way of updates on Wagner’s injury and potential return timeline.

We know that Wagner did not participate in the team’s shootaround before Game 6. Wagner was also ruled out for Game 7 on Saturday, May 3, the day before the game.

This would seem to indicate that Wagner is not close to returning given the star did not have a questionable designation. If the Magic are unable to win Game 7, Wagner will have a long offseason to recover.

The challenge is Orlando faces a quick turnaround if the team advances to face either the Toronto Raptors or Cleveland Cavaliers in the next round. An Orlando victory sets up Game 1 against either Cleveland or Toronto on Tuesday, May 5.

Wagner was spotted in a walking boot during the Pistons-Magic clash in Game 6. Ahead of Game 6, Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley indicated that Wagner had not done any on-court work since the injury.

“Although Magic forward Franz Wagner (right calf strain) was already ruled out yesterday for tonight’s Game 6 against the Pistons, I asked Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley if Wagner was able to do anything at shootaround this morning,” Orlando Sentinel’s Jason Beede detailed in a May 1, message on X. “Mosley’s answer: ‘No.'”

Mosley also revealed that there is not a potential return timeline for Wagner.

“Mosley says he doesn’t know if there’s a timeline on Franz’s return,” The Athletic’s Hunter Patterson remarked in an April 29, message on X. “Says it’s more about how Franz responds to treatment moving forward.”

In addition to the coaching staff, Wagner has also been mostly quiet since being sidelined. Wagner left Game 4 as a result of the calf injury.

“Hopefully it’ll be better tomorrow,” Wagner explained to the Orlando Sentinel on April 27. “The guys got it done, so that’s all that matters.”

Wagner has had a concerning recent injury history which has prompted the star to miss significant time. The Magic forward only played in 34 games during the regular season as Wagner dealt with multiple injuries.

Thus far, Wagner’s injury has simply been described as a “right calf strain,” per ESPN’s Shams Charania. Even with a potential win, Wagner’s status moving forward remains a mystery.

“Orlando Magic forward Franz Wagner has been diagnosed with a right calf strain and his availability for Game 5 against the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday is uncertain and will depend on response to treatment, sources tell ESPN,” Charania noted in an April 28, message.

Wagner did not, in fact, play in Game 5 and went on to miss the next two contests in the series as well. For now, Orlando is hoping to notch the franchise’s first playoff series win since 2010.
