The Milwaukee Bucks are signing arguably the best coach available in Taylor Jenkins. But unfortunately, Jenkins fallout in Memphis could cost the Bucks a rumored trade target.

The Milwaukee Bucks are finalizing a deal to make Taylor Jenkins their next head coach, a move that signals a clear organizational reset, but it may also quietly close the door on one of the most talked-about trade possibilities this offseason.

Jenkins, who previously served as a Bucks assistant under Mike Budenholzer, returns with a reputation for player development and culture-building after becoming the winningest coach in Memphis Grizzlies history. On paper, it’s a stabilizing hire for a team coming off a disappointing 32-50 season and mounting internal tension. This return could also mark a new chapter for Taylor Jenkins and the team.

But there’s a ripple effect here. If Taylor Jenkins is the choice to lead Milwaukee forward, it’s hard to ignore what that likely means for any pursuit of star guard Ja Morant, who had been loosely tied to the Bucks in trade speculation. Pairing Morant with Giannis Antetokounmpo might sound appealing from a talent standpoint, but context matters. And in this case, the context makes that pairing far less realistic.

Jenkins and Morant Had Quite the Fallout

Taylor Jenkins and Ja Morant didn’t just drift apart in Memphis, their relationship deteriorated to the point where it played a role in the coach’s exit. Despite consistent playoff appearances, the Grizzlies fired Jenkins late in the 2024-25 season, and reports made it clear that player buy-in had eroded. Furthermore, the behind-the-scenes dynamic with Jenkins, whose full name is Taylor Jenkins, illustrates the impact of team chemistry.

Morant, the franchise centerpiece, was central to that shift. According to multiple reports, he had grown frustrated with Jenkins’ system and his evolving role within it. His production dipped, tensions rose, and internally, the locker room began to tune Jenkins out.

That dynamic matters. You don’t bring in a head coach to reset your culture, only to reunite him with the same star player who helped unravel it. Even if both sides have moved on, the risk of revisiting old friction is real and for a team already dealing with instability, it’s not a gamble worth taking. Taylor Jenkins, whose coaching philosophy focuses on stability, is expected to avoid repeating past mistakes.

Star Power Not Worth the Drama

The Bucks don’t need more volatility, they need alignment. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s long-term future with the franchise is already uncertain, and there have been ongoing tensions between the superstar and the front office. That alone is enough to manage. Moreover, with Taylor Jenkins as a stabilizing force, Milwaukee can focus on harmony.

Last season made one thing clear: a fractured locker room can sink everything. Doc Rivers may have publicly framed his departure as voluntary, but reports of players losing faith in him told a different story. When the locker room isn’t on the same page as the coach and the franchise player isn’t aligned with management, you don’t have a team, you have dysfunction.

Bringing in Morant under those conditions would only amplify the risk. Now you’re asking a new head coach to navigate past tension with a former player, while also stabilizing a locker room and rebuilding trust with your franchise cornerstone. That’s not a recipe for contention, it’s a setup for more chaos. It’s clear that Taylor Jenkins will need to address lingering issues from previous seasons.

This is why Taylor Jenkins’ hiring likely signals a pivot. Milwaukee may still explore ways to upgrade the roster around Giannis, but the focus now shifts toward cleaner fits, players who complement the roster without adding baggage.

If the Bucks want to convince Giannis to stay long-term and eventually sign a supermax extension, they need more than star power. They need cohesion. And right now, all signs point to them moving in that direction, even if it means walking away from a name as big as Ja Morant. Therefore, with Taylor Jenkins in charge, the franchise aims for stability and unity moving forward.
