Luka Dončić’s recovery from a hamstring injury continues as the Lakers monitor his potential return during the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers still don’t have a firm return date for Luka Doncic — but there is growing belief inside the organization that their superstar guard could be back sooner than initially feared.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, optimism is building around Dončić’s recovery from a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, with no setbacks reported as he approaches a critical stage in his rehab timeline.

“The good news surrounding Doncic is that he has not suffered any setbacks and continues to slowly nurture his hamstring injury back to full health,” Siegel reported on Wednesday.

Thursday marks four weeks since Dončić suffered the injury, placing him squarely within the original four-to-six-week recovery window. While the Lakers have remained cautious, the absence of any complications has quietly strengthened hopes of a postseason return.

Luka Dončić Injury Update: Lakers Seeing Progress Without Setbacks

Dončić has yet to resume one-on-one activities and remains in the early stages of his on-court progression.

“Doncic is still at least a week and a half away from progressing to the next step in his recovery process and being reintegrated back into practices and scrimmages,” Siegel wrote, citing league sources.

He has been limited to light individual work during practices and shootarounds, with the Lakers deliberately avoiding any accelerated timeline.

“Because of the severity of the injury and the limitations involved, the Lakers have been in no rush to push Doncic along in this process,” Siegel added.

The expectation within the organization is that Dončić could advance to the next stage of recovery by the end of next week — a step that would include one-on-one work and partial reintegration into team activities.

Lakers Playoff Outlook: Potential Return in Western Conference Semifinals

While Dončić is expected to miss the start of a potential Western Conference Semifinals matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, there is growing optimism that he could return later in the series if his recovery continues without interruption.

“Sources close to the situation said the earliest Doncic would possibly return in a series against the Thunder would be when play shifts to Los Angeles for Games 3 and 4,” Siegel reported.

Even that timeline remains fluid.

“There is no guarantee Doncic would be available for either game, as his status over the next two weeks will be dependent on how his body heals and responds to treatment,” Siegel added.

The Lakers are expected to have more clarity closer to the five-week mark, around May 7, when Dončić’s recovery will be reassessed.

Luka Dončić Season Highlights: Scoring Title Adds Stakes to Return

Despite missing the final stretch of the regular season, Dončić still secured the NBA scoring title with 2,143 total points.

He averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds, becoming the first Lakers player to win the scoring title since Kobe Bryant in the 2006-07 season. Despite capturing his second scoring crown, Dončić was not named a finalist for this season’s MVP award.

A potential second-round matchup with Oklahoma City would also carry added intrigue, offering Dončić a chance to go head-to-head with reigning MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is again considered the favorite to repeat this season.

Lakers Balancing Patience With Championship Aspirations

The timing of Dončić’s potential return carries significant weight for a Lakers team with championship aspirations.

If he is able to return at any point in the postseason, it would provide a major boost to a roster already navigating injuries. At the same time, the organization has made clear there is no shortcut in the recovery process.

“At the same time, the team also understands that there is no way to speed things up,” Siegel noted, emphasizing that Dončić’s availability will depend entirely on how he progresses over the next 10 days.

For now, the focus remains on steady recovery — and the encouraging reality that Dončić continues to move forward without setbacks.

As long as that trend holds, the possibility of a return during the next round remains firmly in play, offering the Lakers a potential boost at a pivotal point in the playoffs.
