Knicks Get Major NBA Finals Update Before 76ers Matchup
Erik Anderso · 2026-05-05 · via New York Knicks News, Rumors, Roster, Schedule & Injury Report

ESPN BET spotlighted the Knicks as the new favorites to win the Eastern Conference, a shift that gives New York the clearest current path to the NBA Finals on ESPN’s futures board. The Knicks were listed at +140 to win the East entering the series, ahead of the Detroit Pistons, Cleveland Cavaliers and 76ers.

That is a notable change in tone around a franchise that has spent most of the modern playoff era trying to crash the top tier, not sit on top of it. But the context matters. The Knicks are coming off a first-round closeout in which they beat the Atlanta Hawks by 51 points, while the 76ers had to survive a seven-game series against the Boston Celtics before turning around for Game 1 at Madison Square Garden.

Is this finally going to be the Knicks’ year? 🔮

ESPN Says New York Knicks Are Now Favorites to Make NBA Finals

The odds do not guarantee anything, but they do capture the changed shape of the East.

According to ESPN’s futures board, the Knicks were listed at +140 to win the conference. Detroit followed at +250, Cleveland at +330 and Philadelphia at +650. ESPN’s championship odds page also showed New York at +850 to win the NBA title while carrying the same +140 conference number.

For Knicks fans, the immediate takeaway is simple: the market sees New York’s path to the Finals as stronger than anyone else’s in the conference.

That does not mean the Knicks have an easy road. It means their combination of form, matchup position and remaining competition has created a real opportunity. New York eliminated Atlanta in six games and closed that series with a 140-89 win. The Knicks built a 47-point halftime lead, an NBA playoff record, during that Game 6 rout.

That kind of finish matters because it gave New York both momentum and a cleaner runway into the second round. Philadelphia, meanwhile, had to expend more to get here.

Knicks-76ers Matchup Comes With a Joel Embiid Health Watch

The 76ers still have the kind of top-end talent that can swing a series quickly.

Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey give Philadelphia two high-pressure offensive engines, and the Sixers’ first-round comeback against Boston adds real proof that they are not just happy to be here. But Game 1 begins with Embiid already on the injury report.

The NBA’s official 5:30 p.m. ET injury report listed Embiid as probable with a right hip contusion. Maxey was listed as available with a right finger tendon strain/splint. Knicks forward Jeremy Sochan was listed as questionable with left hamstring tightness.

That makes the first game especially important for New York. The Knicks have home court, rest, crowd energy and a chance to make Philadelphia chase the series immediately. If Embiid is limited at all, New York’s frontcourt physicality and depth become even more important.

The Brunson factor is also central. The Knicks’ playoff identity still starts with Jalen Brunson controlling possessions late in games, but this version of New York has a broader formula than simply asking Brunson to rescue the offense. The Knicks’ Game 6 demolition of Atlanta showed what happens when their defense, pace and supporting cast all travel together.

That is why the futures shift feels more meaningful than a standard betting update. It reflects a league-wide opening, but also a Knicks team that has done enough to be taken seriously right now.

Knicks vs 76ers Is On NBC/Peacock Tonight

Game 1 of Knicks vs. 76ers is scheduled for Monday, May 4, at 8 p.m. ET at Madison Square Garden.

NBC’s viewing guide says the game will air live on NBC and stream simultaneously on Peacock. The listed matchup is Philadelphia at New York to open the Eastern Conference semifinals.

NBC Sports Philadelphia listed the rest of the early series schedule as Game 2 on Wednesday, May 6, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN; Game 3 on Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video; and Game 4 on Sunday, May 10, at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Games 5, 6 and 7 would be played if necessary.

The Knicks have had promising playoff teams before. They have had Brunson magic before. They have had Madison Square Garden surges before.

What makes this moment different is that the bracket, the odds and the team’s form are all pointing in the same direction. New York still has to beat Embiid, Maxey and a dangerous 76ers team to validate it.

But before Game 1, the Knicks are not being framed as a cute story or a stubborn underdog.

They are being framed as the Eastern Conference team to beat.
