NBA superstar Anthony Edwards is the key piece if the Minnesota Timberwolves want to have any postseason success, but recently, it’s been a knee injury keeping the franchise centerpiece sidelined for a majority of games over the recent stretch.

Edwards sat out for the Timberwolves on Sunday and has played in just two games in the past three and a half weeks. His knee injury was never expected to be a major issue, but based on the latest update, things don’t look too good.

Edwards’ knee was compared to that of Stephen Curry, who missed more than two months with ‘runner’s knee’ and returned to the Golden State Warriors over the weekend after missing 27 games. Edwards has bounced back and forth off the Timberwolves’ injury report, but at a point in the season in which they need him most, his status is still in question.

Edwards has officially been ruled out for the Timberwolves’ next game against the Indiana Pacers.

Anthony Edwards Injury Update, Given Steph Curry Comparison

GettyMINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA – MAY 14: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves hugs Stephen Curry #30 of the Golden State Warriors after Game Five of the Western Conference Second Round NBA Playoffs at Target Center on May 14, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

According to Jon Krawczysnki of The Athletic, Edwards is dealing with the same runner’s knee injury that Curry is just returning from. Officially described as ‘patellofemoral pain syndrome,’ Edwards wasn’t originally expected to miss much time, but the injury has lingered, and put a question mark over his status in the past few weeks.

Curry recently detailed his injury amid his Warriors’ return, calling it ‘unpredictable‘ despite no structural damage. Edwards is in a similar boat, as while he has gotten back on the court on two occasions since being sidelined in mid-March, there’s no verdict on him getting fully healthy.

“(Head coach Chris) Finch indicated that the Wolves are navigating a similarly unpredictable path with Edwards,” the Timberwolves’ insider wrote. “Like Curry, there is nothing structurally wrong with Edwards’ knee. Doctors have told him he is cleared to play when he feels well enough to go. But on the tougher days, the pain can be significant.”

Included in this piece: more context on Anthony Edwards’ knee injury, its similarities to Steph Curry’s and the continued optimism that he will be able to manage it as the playoffs approach.

Edwards also missed time recently with an illness, but regarding his injury status for Sunday against the Charlotte Hornets, it was once again the knee injury, the same one that kept Curry out for more than two months.

“This is all just kind of part of injury management when you’re coming off an injury such as his,” Finch said. “He remains day to day. This is kind of the day-to-day. I don’t think there’s any great concern for anything longer-term. But we’re still in the uncertain phase.”

While Finch said Edwards is day-to-day, he has an uncertain status going forward, with the Timberwolves yet to make an official injury announcement on him coming back. If Curry’s injury is any indication, despite the age gap, Edwards could be facing the first major injury of his career.

Anthony Edwards (injury maintenance) ruled out for Tuesday.

In 60 games this season, the star is averaging 28.9 points, five rebounds, and 3.7 assists on 48.9% shooting.

Minnesota Timberwolves Right Now

GettyPORTLAND, OREGON – OCTOBER 22: Anthony Edwards #5 of the Minnesota Timberwolves reacts against the Portland Trail Blazers at Moda Center on October 22, 2025 in Portland, Oregon.

Along with Edwards, the Timberwolves have wing Jaden McDaniels listed on the injury report. He’s been out for a few games, and based on the latest injury update, is officially week to week with a knee injury of his own.

“An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) conducted by Dr. Craig Bennett at Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine on McDaniels revealed left knee patella tendinopathy and a bone bruise. McDaniels will be listed as week-to-week, and further updates of his progress will be provided when available,” Minnesota announced a week ago.

According to Krawczysnki, McDaniels, averaging 14.8 points in 71 games, “hopes to return before the regular season is over.”

The Timberwolves are currently 46-32 and sixth in the West. While they were previously in a close fight for a top-four seed, after losing their last three games and going 6-9 in the last 15, they’ll likely stay sixth for the 2026 NBA Playoffs.

Without Edwards, wins have been difficult for Minnesota. The team is hopeful he will get back soon, but even if the knee injury doesn’t keep him out for much longer, the ‘unpredictable’ Curry injury evidence doesn’t guarantee he’ll stay healthy.

The Timberwolves are the only team in the NBA to make back-to-back conference finals appearances, but right now, especially without Edwards, that feels like a tall task.
