Kyrie Irving #11 of the Dallas Mavericks looks on during a game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers at Crypto.com Arena on November 28, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.

The Minnesota Timberwolves may have a chance at acquiring Kyrie Irving to fix their biggest flaw of lacking a starting point guard. Minnesota currently has a backcourt of Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo, but neither man has a history of playing the point guard position. The current plan sees Edwards typically running the offense as their superstar, but the team has lacked a strong point guard since Mike Conley’s old age hit a decline.

Fadeaway World pitched the following offseason trade for the Dallas Mavericks to send Irving to Minnesota in a three-team deal:

“Minnesota Timberwolves Receive: Kyrie Irving, Brook Lopez

Los Angeles Clippers Receive: Rudy Gobert

Dallas Mavericks Receive: Derrick Jones Jr., Bogdan Bogdanovic, Joan Beringer, 2029 first-round pick (IND)

With this trade, the Timberwolves finally get that big-name point guard that they have never had next to Anthony Edwards. The last we saw of Irving, he was averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game for the Mavericks in 2024-25. The question, though, is what version would the Timberwolves be getting?”

The trade confirms that the Mavericks would be looking to rebuild with younger pieces and future assets. All three teams will be on the trade market, and it makes sense that a multi-team trade will be needed to move a contract as large as Irving’s.

Why Dallas Mavericks Would Trade Kyrie Irving

The biggest question about this trade proposal features the motives of Dallas moving forward. An argument is there to trade Irving as soon as possible to move ahead with their rebuilding timeline around top prospect Cooper Flagg.

Trading Kyrie gives Flagg’s the keys to the castle right away to build a roster around him. The Mavericks traded Anthony Davis for failing to fit into the current timeline and struggling to stay on the court. Irving has had similar injury woes throughout his career and will have gone over a year without playing a game.

Dallas could wash their hands of a large contract instead of creating false hope for playoff contention with two All-Star caliber players. The proposed trade would land them a future first round draft pick and a young player yet to have a fair chance of proving himself in the NBA.

Why Dallas Mavericks Could Keep Kyrie Irving

Another argument exists to keep the talented Irving and pair him with Flagg to see if they develop chemistry together. Both players went to Duke to create a bond, and Kyrie praised the rising star before he even entered the league.

The Mavericks could try to make the playoffs next season behind Flagg, Irving, and a slew of solid role players behind them. No one expects Dallas to contend for an NBA Championship in 2027, but they could make a late playoff spot to kickstart their progression.

Flagg is expected to become a superstar faster than most prospects his age to warrant keeping another All-Star on the roster. The temptation of giving this a try and building up Kyrie’s trade value with more playing time could easily see them avoiding a trade this summer.
