NFL Network's Kurt Warner argued Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar has the potential to be the top quarterback of the 2026 NFL Draft.

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a big move in the third round of last month’s NFL Draft by selecting Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. He now joins a quarterback room with veteran Mason Rudolph and second-year signal-caller Will Howard. Of course, it is still considered likely that future first-ballot Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers will be back with the team in 2026.

Allar is likely to be a developmental quarterback this season. This being the case, the Steelers are rebuilding his fundamentals, according to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. They are preparing him for life in the NFL, which is what new Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy did with Rodgers back in 2006 when they met in Green Bay.

Here is what Pryor wrote on Tuesday about the Steelers looking to help Allar rebuild himself in preparation for his NFL career:

“The coaching staff essentially uninstalled his old hardware and began rebuilding his fundamentals from the ground up.”

This is not the first time that McCarthy has attempted to do this with a younger quarterback. This is exactly what he did with Rodgers, starting in his second NFL season while he was backing up Brett Favre. He made it a point to especially change Rodgers’ arm mechanics. The four-time MVP would hold the ball up near his ear before attempting to make throws during his college days at Cal. Now, thanks to McCarthy’s tutelage, he has become the greatest pure thrower the game has ever seen. Could Allar end up becoming something very similar?

Aaron Rodgers Could Be Great Teacher for Drew Allar

What could be even better for Allar is if Rodgers ends up inking a deal to return to the Steelers for a possible final NFL season. To have a true legend and artist at the quarterback position in the building with you as you learn could be an extremely valuable opportunity. Rodgers already helped mentor Howard as a rookie, and he could end up doing the same with Allar should he return.

Of course, Rodgers would have the chance to lead the Steelers on another possible playoff run, too. That would be the main reason why he would return. Last season, he recorded 25 total touchdowns and just seven interceptions while posting a steady passer rating of 94.8. Without his above-average play and veteran leadership, the Steelers likely wouldn’t come close to winning their first AFC North title in five years.

With McCarthy coming in to replace Super Bowl-winning head coach Mike Tomlin, Rodgers has the chance to recapture some of his early-career magic. During his 11-year run as the Packers‘ starter under McCarthy (2008-2018), Rodgers won the first two MVP awards of his career and earned seven Pro Bowl nods. In that same span, the Packers made the playoffs eight consecutive times, won five NFC North titles, appeared in three NFC Championship games, and brought home Super Bowl XLV.
