Drew Allar

One of the most interesting picks for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2026 NFL Draft was Penn State quarterback Drew Allar at No. 76 overall in the third round. Allar could now be the future franchise signal caller for the Steelers.

There is a major emphasis on the word “future” there considering the Steelers are most likely preparing for the return of Aaron Rodgers. But should the 42-year-old finally decide to call it a career, Allar could always find his way into a start if injuries hit the depth chart.

Even though the Steelers coaching staff is hoping for the upside in Allar, not everyone is convinced he will be the long-term answer in Pittsburgh. The former Nittany Lions star could have been selected more for depth purposes, with the plan to go after a quarterback in next year’s loaded class.

That is exactly what Fox Sports’ Rob Rang has them doing by selecting one of the more intriguing quarterbacks in the 2027 draft.

Steelers Predicted To Target LaNorris Sellers In 2027

Rang has the Steelers missing out on top quarterbacks Arch Manning out of Texas and Dante Moore out of Oregon. LSU’s Sam Leavitt and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin are also off the board before Pittsburgh selects South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers at No. 14 overall.

“Sellers could have entered the 2026 draft and likely earned a Day 2 selection based on his upside, but he wisely returned to iron out his game,” Rang wrote. “His 33:15 TD-INT ratio over his career illustrates his current inconsistency, but he’s a dynamic athlete with excellent size and a cannon for an arm, and he has the intangibles teams want at quarterback.”

Sellers’ redshirt freshman season in 2024 is what first put him firmly on scouts’ radar. He threw for 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions while leading South Carolina to a 9-4 record. He also rushed for 674 yards and seven scores.

Unfortunately, Sellers was not quite able to duplicate that season in 2025, though he still threw for 2,437 yards, rushed for 270 yards, accounted for 18 total touchdowns and threw eight interceptions.

What It Would Mean For Drew Allar, Steelers

Should they earn the No. 14 pick, it would match the Steelers’ highest draft slot since 2023 when they selected offensive lineman Broderick Jones. It would also be their second first-round quarterback selection in five years after they drafted Kenny Pickett at No. 20 overall in 2022.

Of course, Steelers fans would hope things work out better with Sellers than they did with Pickett, who is now set to play for his third NFL team in 2026 after spending only two seasons in Pittsburgh.

Sellers would be the complete opposite of what the Steelers have typically had at quarterback over the years. His dual-threat ability would make him one of the more dynamic players in the NFL.

What makes this prediction even more intriguing is the presence of Mike McCarthy as head coach. By now, it is widely believed McCarthy was brought in not only to help find Pittsburgh’s next franchise quarterback, but to develop him as well.

Granted, that could still be Howard or Allar. But if neither shows enough to prove he is the answer, finding the next signal caller in 2027 will become paramount.
