The Dallas Cowboys rewarded star kicker Brandon Aubrey with a new contract this offseason. Once a bargain signing as a flier on a former soccer player-turned-USFL stud, Aubrey quickly established himself as one of the premier kickers in the NFL. Now, the Cowboys are making sure he doesn’t go anywhere.

It may seem strange to call a kicker a star, but Aubrey is one of Dallas’ best players, no question. He has a career 88.2-percent made field goal rate and has only missed four extra points across three seasons. He’s 35-44 for on field goals of 50 yards or more and has connected on at least one 60-yarder in each of his seasons. He’s a three-time first-team All-Pro, as well.

Aubrey signed a four-year, $28 million extension that makes him the highest-paid kicker in the league at $7 million in average annual value. He also has $20 million in guarantees.

I’m happy to have it behind me,” Aubrey said on his new contract. “Happy to be able to stay here and play for a record-setting contract. It’s an awesome achievement, something that I never thought I would be able to say.”

“I just wanted to have a job, and this locks me up for the foreseeable future and gives me that job that I wanted when I started this thing,” he continued. “I’m just excited to have a job and have it right here in Dallas where I grew up.”

Aubrey being a hometown hero makes the story that much sweeter. Not everything on Dallas’ roster is set or figured out — but kicker is one position they don’t have to worry about.

The Cowboys Added Premium Defensive Talent in the Draft

The Cowboys did a little wheeling and dealing the night of the first round, moving up one spot with the Dolphins to make sure they got Ohio State S Caleb Downs with their first pick, before moving back three spots later in the first (with the Eagles, no less) to add some extra value and draft Central Florida ED Malachi Lawrence.

Downs was arguably the best player in the entire class — he only slipped out of the top 10 because the league undervalues the safety position. He’s an immediate starter and possible star in a Cowboys defense that desperately needs playmakers.

Lawrence, on the other hand, is a big upside swing. He was productive at UCF, but his draft stock soared at the Scouting Combine in February, where he proved himself a freakish athlete with unreal measurables. He can have a positive impact on this Dallas front as a rookie.

After trading for Rashan Gary and drafting Michigan’s Jaishawn Barham in the third round, the Cowboys have a much deeper and more talented defense than they did a year ago. The Cowboys have a prolific offense last season, but their defense was so bad it barely mattered. Now, they’ll have a better chance.
