All through the offseason, the Dallas Cowboys brass has insisted that the most important move it made since the end of 2025 has not been the trade for Rashan Gary or the franchise tag contract for George Pickens or the record contract for Brandon Aubrey or the drafting of Caleb Downs. All that is positive, for sure, and for a roster that needed to hold its good pieces on offense and add some more on defense, there was plenty of good news.

But both Jerry Jones and COO Stephen Jones, as well as head coach Brian Schottenheimer, have been adamant that what mattered most this winter was not so much the personnel, but the one new person in the building who can bring it all together: new defensive coordinator Christian Parker.

Cowboys’ Christian Parker Will ‘Look Good’ With Super Bowl Trip

Remember what Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said about Parker at the NFL owners’ meetings in March? Jones was asked about the top new additions on defense, headlined by Gary and safety Jalen Thompson, and whether it was, in fact, Parker who was the most important addition.

Said Jones: “He certainly is right there as a contender. He is. He’s impressive. He was impressive in interviews and he’s been impressive to work with. It’s a great win-win. We appreciate all he’s bringing to the table, from where he is — by the way, I can say that about several of the other position coaches as well — but he has a great chance to look good, because he’s not coming in with a Super Bowl defense.

“And should he end up with one, then he’ll look like one of the greatest defensive minded coaches there is.”

Christian Parker Could Be a Head Coach Soon

There is no need, of course, to reiterate just how poor the Cowboys defense was in 2025, other than to say it gave up 511 points, the most by any defense in franchise history. Scheme, organization, personnel–it all went wrong. And Parker has the job of fixing it.

One analyst and reporter who has been very high on Parker all along has been ESPN’s Peter Schrager, who said in a video this week that Parker could be the key to getting the Cowboys into contention after back-to-back seven-win seasons.

“The Cowboys wake up from this nightmare of last season, where their offense was high-flying and they traded Micah Parsons and they thought they could get by,” Schrager said. “And then their defense was absolute crap. They wake up from this nightmare and they’re like, wait a second, we suddenly have Rashan Gary. We suddenly have Malachi Lawrence, we still have Kenny Clark in the middle.

“And oh, by the way, we spent in free agency a little bit and now we’ve got Caleb Downs and the new defensive coordinator who, by the way, is going to be a head coach very soon if they have success on defense.”

Cowboys Defense Key to Becoming a Contender

One of the keys for Parker is his ability to teach. At 34 years old, he is a departure from the retread head coach model the Cowboys have used in the past when finding defensive coordinators. He brings a level of energy that the likes of Matt Eberflus or Mike Zimmer were never going to bring, and that sets him apart, Schrager said.

He added: “Christian Parker, the defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, might be the most fascinating person in the NFL this season. He’s 34 years old and an absolute firebrand, like, out of bed and energy, energy, energy. Beloved by players. And he comes from the rival Eagles. …

“If the defense is somewhat, somewhat serviceable, I am talking top half of the league, you better believe the Cowboys are a playoff team and you better believe the Cowboys are a Super Bowl contender.”
