Former Vanderbilt quarterback Michael Wright Jr. could be a find for the Seahawks.

The Seattle Seahawks have one of the most-established quarterback rooms in the NFL with Sam Darnold, who just led the team to the Super Bowl, and backups Drew Lock and Jalen Milroe.

That said, the Seahawks are looking to develop prospects for the future as the rest of the 31 NFL teams are doing so after the draft. Former East Carolina quarterback Mike Wright Jr. will get that opportunity.

Wright posted a doctored photo of himself in a Seahawks uniform with the No. 0 jersey, which isn’t that unusual. Wright, who received a rookie minicamp invitation, will play wide receiver, too, at camp.

The Georgia native played at Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Northwest and East Carolina between 2020 and 2025. He threw for 2,887 yards and 24 touchdowns in 53 games, and he rushed for 1,385 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Wright has the athleticism to play wide receiver, which he showed as a runner. His biggest seasons came during his time at Vanderbilt when he rushed for a career high of 571 yards and five touchdowns amid a 7.3 yards per carry average in 2022.

Mike Wright Looks to Rekindle Early Success

Wright’s success at Vanderbilt came about after quarterback Ken Seals went down during the 2021 season, and Wright started five games that year followed by six in 2022. In those two seasons, Wright threw for at least 974 yards and eight touchdowns each season, and he posted a passer rating of 111.4 or better.

Wright transferred to Mississippi State in 2023 after splitting time with former Commodores quarterback A.J. Swann. It didn’t equate to more snaps as Wright became the backup to Bulldogs quarterback Will Rogers, and Wright didn’t see major playing time until an injury to Rogers later that season.

In three starts, Wright completed 56.5% of his passes for 453 yards and three touchdowns versus three picks. Wright also tallied 324 yards and three touchdowns on 71 carries for the Bulldogs.

His move to the Big Ten with Northwestern in 2024 also fell short of his hopes. Wright only started two games for the Wildcats, as he completed career best 57.6% of his passes for 354 yards and no touchdowns versus a pick. He also rushed for 84 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.

For 2025, Wright moved on to East Carolina, where the Pirates utilized his rushing skills but didn’t start him. Wright ran for 72 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in 12 games played, and he went 3-7 passing for 13 yards.

Michael Wright Jr. is Extremely Versatile

Wright did a little bit of everything with the Pirates in 2025 as the only FBS players to play five positions.

He spent time at running back, wide receiver, cornerback, kick returner, and punter. Wright had six receptions for 39 yards with the Pirates, and he made an interception on defense.

While he didn’t get to return a kick when lined up to do that, he did hit a long punt of 53 yards in a game against Memphis. He looks poised to play quarterback and receiver at the rookie minicamp in May with the Seahawks, but Super Bowl champions have a few additional options to consider with Wright if desired.
