Sean Tucker #44 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would be a sensible Cowboys trade target

The Dallas Cowboys have most of their offense worked out at this point of the 2026 offseason. Assuming they can settle on an answer at left tackle and work out the depth chart among the wide receivers, it’s really not the offense that has raised all that many concerns for Dallas this spring. Except … well, there is a hole.

That would be in the running back room, where the team has established Javonte Williams as the starter but where the Cowboys have not quite worked out how the rest of the depth chart behind him is going to look. Dallas has multiple options on hand–Malik Davis is probably the reliable No. 2 option, Jaydon Blue is the most talented, and Phil Mafah is the wildcard–but the Cowboys don’t have a player who is well-established as the backup.

And that’s a potential problem. Williams ran for 1,201 yards last season, and was signed to a three-year contract in the offseason, but that’s the only year in which he has been a featured back for a whole season. We don’t know, exactly, how he will handle carrying the bulk of the load in his second Dallas season.

Cowboys in Need of RB Depth

With that in mind, Cowboys writer Brandon Loree of Blogging the Boys noted on Twitter/X that the Cowboys should address the situation in the coming weeks.

He wrote: “The #Cowboys should add another experienced running back to the room. Why? Javonte Williams had 1,201 rushing yards in 2025. Malik Davis, Jaydon Blue, Hunter Luepke, Phil Mafah, Israel Abanikanda, and Dominic Richardson have a combined career total of 757 rushing yards.”

Loree continued by suggesting two options: “Two names the #Cowboys should trade for if I were in the GM chair: Sean Tucker, TB Roschon Johnson, CHI.”

Sean Tucker Makes Sense for Cowboys

Johnson would be of local interest for the Cowboys, a Port Arthur native who played at Texas. But Tucker might be of more interest, football-wise, because of the flashes of brilliance he has shown during his brief career in Tampa Bay. Tucker is behind Bucky Irving, and was also behind Rashaad White last year. White is gone now, but the Buccaneers signed Kenneth Gainwell to replace him.

It would make sense for the Cowboys to try to pluck Sean Tucker, both for depth and because the Bucs have testified to the fact that he is underrated. Tucker had 320 yards on 86 carries last season, with seven touchdowns, and had a game in which he went for 106 yards on 19 carries with two touchdowns against Buffalo in Week 11.

Sean Tucker Is and ‘Explosive Runner’

That was when Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles noted that Tucker plays a big role for Tampa, even if he does not get consistent opportunities as the No. 3 back. He would, however, likely vault to the RB2 role in Dallas if the Cowboys traded for him.

Here’s what Bowles said: “Sean brings us another explosive runner. He’s a game breaker for us. He’s got very good contact balance, he can break a lot of tackles, and he can naturally find holes. Like I keep telling the guys on offense, we’ve got to give him the ball more.”
