LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - FEBRUARY 10: Drake Maye attends Verizon’s “Run the Playlist Live” during Super Bowl LVIII on February 10, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For Drake Maye, football has always been a family story.

Long before he became the future face of the New England Patriots franchise, Maye was growing up in one of the most sports-driven families in North Carolina. But while his football rise has included plenty of attention on his arm talent, leadership, and NFL future, those closest to the quarterback have consistently pointed to another major influence in his life: his mom, Aimee Maye.

As Patriots fans continue learning more about the young quarterback entering a pivotal season in New England, Maye’s close relationship with his family has remained a major part of his story.

Drake Maye’s Family Has Always Been Central to His Football Journey

Maye’s football story has never been built around just one person.

His father, Mark Maye, played quarterback at the University of North Carolina, while several of his brothers also became standout athletes. But throughout Maye’s rise from high school star to college standout to NFL first-round pick, family support remained a constant part of the story.

That became especially clear during the 2024 NFL Draft.

When the Patriots selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick, cameras immediately captured emotional moments with his family as he celebrated one of the biggest nights of his life. His embrace with his parents quickly became one of the defining moments of New England’s draft night coverage.

The quarterback has repeatedly spoken about how much his family means to him, and people around the program have long described the Mayes as an extremely tight-knit group.

Earlier this year, Maye offered one of his most heartfelt public comments about his mom while reflecting on his family support system ahead of the Super Bowl. The Patriots quarterback called Aimee Maye the “rock of the family” and even described her as “the best athlete” in the household, thanking her for years of support throughout his football journey.

Patriots Fans Have Embraced Drake Maye’s Personality

Part of what has made Maye so popular early in his Patriots tenure is how grounded he has appeared despite the pressure surrounding him.

Replacing a legendary era of football in New England comes with enormous expectations. Yet Maye has consistently carried himself with a calm, team-first approach that has resonated with fans and teammates alike.

That personality has often been tied back to the environment he grew up in.

Throughout his rookie season, Patriots broadcasts and social media coverage occasionally highlighted family moments involving Maye, helping fuel even more fan interest in the quarterback away from football. Patriots fans have especially gravitated toward the authentic, low-key side of his personality compared to the louder celebrity culture that sometimes surrounds young NFL stars.

Drake Maye Entering Massive Season for New England

The spotlight surrounding Maye is only getting bigger entering the 2026 season.

After flashes of promise during his rookie year, the Patriots are now building heavily around the former North Carolina star as the organization attempts to return to playoff contention. New head coach Mike Vrabel and the Patriots coaching staff are expected to lean heavily on Maye’s development moving forward.

That pressure makes his support system even more important.

For many quarterbacks, life changes dramatically after becoming a top NFL draft pick. But Maye has consistently appeared rooted in the same family-focused approach that helped shape him before he ever arrived in Foxborough.

And as Patriots fans continue searching for signs that the franchise has finally found its next long-term quarterback, Maye’s close bond with his family — especially his mom — continues resonating with supporters throughout New England.
