The Cleveland Browns have been named a landing spot for QB Brendan Sorsby.

The Cleveland Browns already have one of the most crowded quarterback rooms in the NFL. They may soon have to decide whether to make it even more complicated.

Todd McShay mentioned Cleveland as a potential landing spot for Sorsby — even if it costs the team a first-round pick.

“If I’m the, I don’t know, the Browns. If we have the quarterback coach, and we have the contract the right way, we have the psychologists putting a stamp on it. If we can get aligned, I think this guy’s worth it,” McShay said. “And if that’s the case, I get to draft him, and I’m doing it with a first-round pick. And I’m doing that because I think he’s got a chance to be special.”

Brendan Sorsby Faces Uncertain Future

At Cincinnati over the past two seasons, Sorsby threw 45 touchdowns against just 12 interceptions for 5,613 passing yards. He added 1,027 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground. At 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, he’s a legitimate dual-threat prospect.

But the path to Cleveland — or anywhere in the NFL — is far from clear. Sorsby allegedly wagered on several collegiate sporting events, including at least one Indiana game in 2022 while he was on the roster.

Sorsby announced recently that he is stepping away from Texas Tech football to enter a gambling addiction program.

Browns Not Scared to Take a Chance

The Browns also aren’t in a great position to add another hefty dose of chaos to the mix. Cleveland’s quarterback room currently includes Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and sixth-round pick Taylen Green. Adding Sorsby would push that group to five and add another layer of complexity.

That said, the Browns under general manager Andrew Berry have not been shy to take gambles on players who have off-field troubles. Watson is a prime example, as is wide receiver Isaiah Bond.

With a move for Sorsby unlikely, the Browns will likely stick to their current group as they sort out the starting spot. Watson has reportedly taken a lead and is the favorite to be named the starter, per Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.

Browns head coach Todd Monken has yet to declare anything resembling a firm statement on the quarterback situation. While he’d like to have a decision sooner rather than later, he acknowledged that there has not been enough time to make a valid assessment.

“I’m not there yet, so I can’t say there’s a leader,” Monken said after veteran minicamp. “We’ve been on the field three days.”

Sanders is still firmly in the mix. He started seven games as a rookie and offers a clearer path forward if he proves effective. Watson is entering the final year of his contract, while Sanders has three seasons left on his fifth-round rookie deal.
