Alec Pierce Draft

The Indianapolis Colts selected wide receiver Alec Pierce with the 53rd overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Indianapolis Colts front office, led by general manager Chris Ballard, got down to business this offseason. They extended not only their franchise quarterback, Daniel Jones, but also the top receiving threat on the free agent market, Alec Pierce. Pierce recently appeared on teammate Josh Downs’ podcast, Downs 2 Business, where he broke down his mentality that led to the ultimate four-year, $114 million agreement.

Why did Alec Pierce re-sign with the Indianapolis Colts?

He breaks down what really happened in free agency.

When asked about the free agent experience, Pierce explained that, “It was a long process. Ballard did a good job communicating, kind of just like, trust with me, stay with me…It didn’t really happen until a couple of weeks before the deadline, when we started throwing back offers and figuring that out. I knew from the jump like it was the quarterback position. You [Josh Downs] know as a receiver…I had to treat them like they didn’t have a quarterback until they figured out the quarterback situation…in terms of receiver and knowing how you’re going to be able to play in an offense and your role and whatnot, like you never want to go to a team that has no plan with the quarterback.”

Free Agency Became Overwhelming For Alec Pierce

Alec Pierce Stats

GettyIndianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce recorded 47 catches for 1,003 yards and six touchdowns in 2025.

Pierce explained that his return hinged on Daniel Jones’s return to the team and that the only time he truly considered leaving Indy was after the Colts used the transition tag on Jones.

“That’s like where the biggest unknown was for me. The only time I started thinking about other teams and stuff was because I didn’t know about that tag; I was just unsure. I’ve never heard of that transition tag that Daniel had…I thought another team might take Daniel then, and then I was kind of like worried, like, if our quarterbacks’ gone, what is the direction? There was probably like a two to three day period where I was kind of considering, ‘man, am I really going to have to go somewhere else?’”

Pierce also relayed that despite being the top receiver on the market, he never really considered free agency as an option until the end.

“I had all the leverage once I got to free agency. I was really, until about I think the tag deadline [which] was like the first week of March…Really, most or all of February, I’m thinking I’m going to get tagged. So I was kind of thinking, I’m not even really considering other stuff. I’m going to be in Indy, which is cool with me. That’s where I wanted to be ultimately. So I wasn’t really stressed about it. But then, like, it almost put a lot of stress and overwhelming on me the fact that you get to control your own destiny…These are like big life-altering decisions, and with free agency, you have like three days to make this decision…It’s kind of crazy”.

Alec Pierce and Daniel Jones Not Participating in Colts’ Offseason Program

Ultimately, everything worked out for Pierce as he became the highest-paid free-agent wide receiver in history, and Daniel Jones got his two-year $88 million deal.

The Colts are hoping that this duo can help reclaim the magic that the team began the 2025 season with and build on it for next season. While Michael Pittman Jr. traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, it puts even more emphasis on Pierce’s involvement within the offense.

Neither Pierce nor Jones will be present for most of the Colts’ offseason workouts, which begin May 8th. Jones is still recovering from his torn Achilles tendon, and Pierce is on the way back from surgery he had for a nagging ankle injury. Luckily for the Colts, Jones’ and Pierce’s connection is strong and shouldn’t need much time to get back in sync when both return to the field.
