Broncos Receive Major Schedule Update Ahead of NFL Release

The NFL officially revealed another major piece of the 2026 schedule puzzle on Tuesday.

A major announcement was made that the Denver Broncos will open their season on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs in the first edition of Monday Night Football on Sept. 14 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The update comes just two days before the NFL’s full schedule release on Thursday night. Iit already gives Broncos fans a massive early look at one of the most anticipated matchups of the opening weekend.

Originally, the NFL had not finalized where the game would be played. Multiple reports earlier Tuesday suggested the site was still being determined before the league officially confirmed Kansas City as the host later in the afternoon.

For Denver, the matchup immediately adds another layer of intrigue to what is already shaping up to be one of the franchise’s biggest seasons in years.

The Broncos enter 2026 after a 14-3 campaign that ended with an AFC Championship Game appearance and their first AFC West title since 2015.

Now, Sean Payton’s group gets the primetime spotlight right away.

Broncos Get Early Shot at AFC West Rival

There may not have been a better possible setup for Denver than drawing Kansas City in Week 1.

The Broncos have won three straight games against the Chiefs and four of the last five overall after years of Kansas City dominance in the division.

Even more importantly, Denver gets arguably its toughest road environment out of the way immediately instead of dealing with Arrowhead Stadium weather later in the season.

It also potentially lines up well with uncertainty surrounding Patrick Mahomes.

Ideal scenario for the Broncos to start the season on MNF @ Chiefs:

🏈Patrick Mahomes’ availability in the air. If he does play, he’ll be knocking rust off

🏈Get the harder game against the Chiefs out of the way

🏈Last time the Broncos beat the Chiefs in KC (when both teams

Mahomes is attempting to return from the torn ACL and LCL he suffered late last season and has repeatedly stated his goal is to be ready for Week 1. The NFL clearly believes there is a strong chance that happens if the league is comfortable placing the Chiefs in the standalone Monday night spotlight to close opening weekend.

Still, if Mahomes does play, it would likely be his first live action in roughly nine months and could come with some inevitable rust.

Meanwhile, Denver is expected to have Bo Nix back healthy after he suffered an ankle injury during the AFC playoffs. Nix emerged as one of the NFL’s breakout stars last season while helping lead the Broncos to the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

NFL Believes Broncos Are Legitimate Contenders

This scheduling decision also says a lot about how the NFL views Denver entering 2026.

The Broncos are no longer being treated like an up-and-coming team. They are now firmly in the league’s marquee category.

Not only are they opening the season in prime time, but the matchup itself carries major storylines. Denver ended Kansas City’s nine-year run atop the AFC West last season and now immediately gets a chance to prove it can stay there.

The offseason additions only amplified expectations.

The Broncos traded for Jaylen Waddle earlier this offseason, retained most of last year’s core roster and continue building around Payton and Nix.

Kansas City, meanwhile, enters a fascinating transition year after missing the playoffs for the first time since 2014.

With the full NFL schedule set to officially drop Thursday night, Denver already knows one thing for certain:

Its road back to the AFC West crown will begin under the brightest lights possible at Arrowhead Stadium.
