Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill remains an NFL free agent

Over the past few seasons, the faces of the Miami Dolphins have been quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyreek Hill. In 2026, the Dolphins will enter a new era, where they will most likely be without either of the two players.

After back-to-back losing seasons and declining individual performances, Hill and Tagovailoa were both released prior to free agency. Tagovailoa’s release was primarily due to his declining performance, which resulted in him getting benched for the final three games of the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Hill was released for salary cap reasons as he was set to take on a $51 million cap hit had he stayed on the Dolphins roster.

Unfortunately for Hill, unlike Tagovailoa who was able to quickly secure a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons, he has not yet signed with any NFL team and remains a free agent.

Former Miami Dolphins Wide Receiver Tyreek Hill Remains a Free Agent

Hill’s market being as quiet as it is is likely a result of the former All-Pro wide receiver suffering a devastating dislocated knee injury during Week 4 of the 2025 season. Prior to the injury, Hill appeared poised for a bounceback season as he was on pace for his second 100-yard game of the season until the injury in the third quarter. The injury resulted in Hill missing the rest of the season.

Due to the devastating nature of the injury, Hill’s knee required multiple surgeries. He underwent surgery shortly after the injury occurred, but during a stream in February Hill shared he had to undergo an additional surgery. 

Hill said, “My recovery is going good, bro. Like I said earlier in the stream, I got to have one more surgery.” He added, “It hasn’t been as rough as people try to make it seem, you know what I’m saying, but I’ll say, me, filling my time with DJ, and travelling to all these different places, It has been a lot easier for myself. I’m just enjoying my life, I’m enjoying myself.”

Hill’s agent had previously stated that the expectation was that the wide receiver would be ready for the 2026 season; however, the second surgery likely means his timeline is unclear. 

Possible Reunion With Dolphins

Despite being released by the Dolphins, Hill shared that he had been rehabbing in the team’s facility. While a reunion could make sense for Hill and Miami, as the Dolphins do need an established NFL receiver, they already have one wide receiver with injury concerns, as third-round selection Chris Bell is currently rehabbing from an ACL tear he suffered late in the 2025 season.

Another possible option for Hill is a reunion with his first team, the Kansas City Chiefs. CBS Sports writer Bryan DeArdo listed Hill signing with the Chiefs as one of the moves that should happen this offseason. DeArdo wrote:

“It’s been a quiet offseason for Hill, who is still working his way back from last year’s horrific, season-ending knee injury. At age 32 and coming off a major injury, Hill’s best chance at playing this season might be back in Kansas City in a complementary role.

The Chiefs aren’t lacking at receiver, but can you really ever have too many wideouts in today’s NFL? The answer is no, which is one reason why a Hill-Chiefs reunion is likely. Hill’s rapport with Patrick Mahomes doesn’t hurt, either.”
