It is now officially official: the New York Jets will start the 2026 season on the road.

A combination of NFL announcements confirmed this news.

The Week 1 Monday Night Football game will be the Denver Broncos traveling to play the Kansas City Chiefs.

The only chance the Jets had at opening up at home was a Monday Night Football appearance. That is no longer in the cards, nor was it very likely anyway, candidly coming off a 3-14 season.

That is because the NFL announced that the New York Giants will be hosting the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium in Week 1. That game will take place on Sunday Night Football. The crew of people who work at MetLife Stadium can’t make the necessary changes from a Jets home game to a Giants home game in such a limited amount of time.

So with the Giants playing in that same stadium at night, it made it impossible for the Jets to have a home afternoon game in Week 1.

In other words, all of that word salad means the Jets are guaranteed to open the season on the road.

Process of Elimination

The Jets’ opening up on the road eliminates half the field of potential opponents the team could have faced in Week 1.

Some additional news and notes from around the league have narrowed that pool of teams even more.

Obviously, with the Chiefs and Broncos facing off in Week 1, that eliminates Kansas City as an option for the green and white.

No potential Justin Fields filling in for Patrick Mahomes storyline in the season opener, I’m afraid.

That isn’t the only opponent that has been crossed off the list. ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter revealed that the Bills will open up their brand new stadium to start Week 2 against the Detroit Lions.

If Buffalo is opening its stadium in Week 2, that means the Bills will also have to start the 2026 season on the road. In other words, the Jets’ traveling to Buffalo has been removed from the list of possible Week 1 contests.

The Only Teams Who Are Left in Consideration

That leaves seven possible opponents for the Jets in Week 1:

• Miami Dolphins
• New England Patriots
• Los Angeles Chargers
• Chicago Bears
• Detroit Lions
• Tennessee Titans
• Arizona Cardinals

Beat reporter Nick Faria of Jets X-Factor told me on “The Manchild Show with Boy Green Digital” that he believes it is really down to two teams.

He believes the Jets will either open the road against an AFC East rival in the Dolphins or against the Titans.

Faria explained that Jets fans should be begging for Miami. They are a team that appears to be tanking, and while weather can be a factor in Miami in September, that is one of the most eminently winnable games on the schedule.

Getting off to a hot start is key for head coach Aaron Glenn, Faria told me on the podcast.

However, the most obvious choice is the Titans. The NFL schedule makers love the revenge angle. Robert Saleh is a former Jets head coach, and his roster is littered with ex-Jets. That appears to be the betting favorite at this stage among the fan base.
