Former Giants QB Daniel Jones Gets Important Injury Update

Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is with the Colts, and their coach has issued an important injury update about the player.

The New York Giants have moved on from their Daniel Jones era and are firmly with quarterback Jaxson Dart, but it’s hard not to look back at how the longtime Giants signal-caller is doing with his current team, the Indianapolis Colts.

Jones is recovering from a ruptured right Achilles tendon injury, which he had surgery for back in December. The injury ended his 2025-26 season and was a serious one, but that’s nothing new in the NFL. Now, Colts head coach Shane Steichen is sharing an injury update regarding Jones’ progress.

On Tuesday, April 21, Shane Steichen told reporters that Jones has started “throwing the football and is performing well on his dropbacks,” according to the NFL’s official website. He elaborated on how the player is doing amid recovery, too.

Daniel Jones Injury Update Ahead of His Season With the Indianapolis Colts

In March, Jones signed a large, two-year, $88 million contract extension with the Colts, according to research from Spotrac, and that right there was a sign the Colts knew he’d be healthy and ready to go when September rolls around. Now, Jones appears to be well on the way to a real recovery. Steichen says he’s done a great job with his rehab and has been “tirelessly working at it.”

“He’s been in here every day, 8 to 3 o’clock,” he added on Tuesday, according to ESPN. “I know he’s trying to hit certain landmarks, and he’s on a good path with that.”

Steichen even said that he’s consulted with Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens on how the NBA team handled the Achilles recovery of Jayson Tatum, who had a torn Achilles in the 2025 postseason but came back stronger than ever. Also, Tatum and Jones had the same surgeon for their Achilles injury.

“So, those guys know how to go about their business in the rehab process, and I think Daniel’s doing it the right way,” Steichen added. “Him dropping back and throwing right now is pretty impressive.”

But, that doesn’t mean the Colts are going to make any rash moves. According to Steichen, although Jones is “ripping and roaring and ready to go and all those things,” he knows the team has “got to be smart.”

New York Giants Have Their Sights Set on the 2026 NFL Draft

So, while it’s fun to look back at Jones and see how he’s doing, the New York Giants have to be focused on their future. That starts with the 2026 NFL draft on Thursday, April 23.

Bucky Brooks, in a piece for the NFL’s official website, has the New York Giants taking running back Jeremiyah Love of Notre Dame as their No. 5 pick and wide receiver Jordyn Tyson of Arizona State for No. 10. So, that’s a lot of help for Dart.

Regarding Love, Brooks says Joe Schoen can “atone for his Saquon Barkley mistake by adding a dynamic weapon with gold jacket-caliber traits as a runner and receiver. Love will team with Cam Skattebo and Malik Nabers to give Jaxson Dart a stellar supporting cast that will help the second-year pro grow.”

He also calls Tyson “a dominant lead receiver with big-play potential.” So, both of these players would greatly help the New York Giants‘ offense, and that’s music to Dart’s ears.
