One NFL insider pointed out a red flag that could prevent the Steelers from drafting Drew Allar

Despite all the work the Pittsburgh Steelers have done this offseason, they are entering the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft with a major question mark at the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers is still contemplating his future in the NFL, which has left the Steelers in a tough spot for the second straight offseason.

Even if Rodgers does return for one more year in 2026, Pittsburgh is going to have to find a long-term answer at the quarterback position at some point down the line. As a result, the front office is taking a long look at several prospects at this spot ahead of the draft, with Penn State Nittany Lions star Drew Allar being the latest player to catch the team’s attention. According to one NFL insider, though, there’s a big red flag surrounding Allar that could cause problems.

Insider Warns Steelers About Drafting Drew Allar

Allar is polarizing but has upside. Some people in league believe he has a footwork issue that can be fixed. Needs the right place/system in a big way. https://t.co/puII4ximRT

Allar is one of the most intriguing prospects available in the draft. While he was never the flashiest player during his time with Penn State, Allar typically found a way to lead his team to wins. His best season came in 2024, as he threw for 3,327 yards and 24 touchdowns, while also rushing for 302 yards and six more scores.

In 2025, Allar enjoyed a strong start to the year, but he ended up suffering a season-ending ankle injury midway through October. That brought an unexpectedly swift end to Allar’s collegiate career, as he was forced to declare for the 2026 draft and hope that he could show off his injury rehab progress before the event gets underway.

Given his injury situation, Allar has somewhat flown under the radar in the pre-draft process, but he’s caught the Steelers’ attention recently, as the team brought him to town for a visit ahead of the action. While Allar could be a sneaky good mid-round pick, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN warned that a footwork issue could present problems for Allar, even though the outstanding belief is that it can be fixed.

“Allar is polarizing but has upside,” Fowler wrote in a post on X. “Some people in league believe he has a footwork issue that can be fixed. Needs the right place/system in a big way.”

Should the Steelers Draft Drew Allar?

Drew Allar

GettyNFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the Pittsburgh Steelers will host Penn State quarterback Drew Allar on an NFL pre-draft visit Wednesday.

Even with his injury concerns, Allar still has enough upside that teams are considering using a Day 2 pick on him. The Steelers are armed with 12 picks in this draft, which is the most of any team in the league, and it is pretty much guaranteed that at least one of those selections will be used to address the quarterback position.

Allar’s draft stock is a bit all over the place, and it remains to be seen if Pittsburgh will be comfortable using a second or third-round pick on him in order to bring him to town. The Steelers are likely hoping to get some clarity on Rodgers’ status before the draft to help guide them in their decision, but there’s no guarantee that will come. With that being said, it may be best to pass on Allar unless he begins to slide down the board.
