Miami Dolphins Day 2 NFL Draft News

Given the state of the Miami Dolphins’ roster, it was impossible for new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan to address every need in the first round of the draft. Fortunately, after the first day, Miami still has four selections on the second day of the draft.

While fans may have been hoping for the Dolphins to select a defensive end, like Reuben Bain Jr., who was available to Miami, or safety Caleb Downs, Miami opted to address their offensive line by selecting Kadyn Proctor out of Alabama with their first selection. And then, the team traded up three slots to select San Diego State cornerback Chris Johnson with the 27th overall pick. Johnson marked the highest cornerback selected by the Dolphins since the team took Noah Igbinoghene in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Now, hours before Day 2 of the NFL Draft kicks off, an NFL Network insider has shared what the Dolphins may do with their next selection.

Miami Dolphins Looking to Trade Up

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that the Miami Dolphins are currently looking to trade up in the second round of the NFL Draft, as they seek to improve their position in the second round.

Pelissero also mentioned several prospects teams could target early in the second round. One of the names that makes the most sense for the Dolphins is Washington Huskies wide receiver Denzel Boston, who had been linked to Miami as a possible selection with their 30th overall pick.

Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer previously predicted Miami would draft Boston with the No. 30 selection. Breer wrote:

“It’s a big need, yes, and it’s something that the Dolphins can do to give Malik Willis a chance. And in a year in which Sullivan and Hafley will be focused on building the roster, Boston helps them do that, as a big, physical target who can play inside and outside.”

Boston appeared in 12 games for Washington during his final season, registering 62 receptions for 881 yards with 11 touchdowns.

Denzel Boston’s Prospect Ranking

Boston would be great value for the Dolphins in the second round, as he was ranked as the 23rd-best prospect by NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah. Regarding Boston, Jeremiah wrote:

“Boston is a big-framed wideout with exceptional ball skills and production. He lines up both outside and in the slot. He uses his upper-body strength to power through press coverage. He is a long strider and understands how to use his big body to wall off defenders at all three levels. He is an outstanding ball winner. He has a huge catch radius and can play above the rim in the red zone. He makes some outstanding catches (SEE: the Colorado State and Michigan games). After the catch, he relies more on physicality than finesse to create extra yardage. Overall, Boston’s skill set is very similar to Courtland Sutton’s when the two-time Pro Bowler was coming out of SMU.”

General manager Jon-Eric Sullivan had stated his intention was for the Dolphins to add players with size in the receiver room, and Boston would fill that mold.
