Fernando Mendoza made a deeply personal announcement ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, revealing on social media that his family has launched the Mendoza Family Fund in partnership with the National MS Society.

Mendoza is spending draft week at home with family rather than attending the event in person, and this announcement showed exactly why family remains central to one of the biggest moments of his football life. NBC Sports recently reported that Mendoza chose to share the draft experience with family and close friends in South Florida instead of being in Pittsburgh.

In the video, Mendoza framed the launch around his mother, Elsa Mendoza, who has multiple sclerosis.

“My mom is my light. She is my why,” Mendoza says. Later in the video, the family says the fund was created “to help families like ours” while advancing MS research and helping families navigate the disease.

Why Fernando Mendoza’s announcement stood out on draft week

The Mendoza Family Fund is tied to an established partner, the National MS Society, and comes with a defined mission. According to the organization and a draft-day release, the fund is aimed at supporting families affected by MS while helping drive research and broader awareness.

There is also a concrete financial commitment attached to the launch. Local 10 reported that Mendoza is committing $500,000 to support multiple sclerosis research at the University of Miami Health System and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.

Mendoza is using one of the highest-profile weeks of his career to elevate a cause his family has lived with for years.

The family story behind the Mendoza Family Fund

The emotional center of the video is Elsa Mendoza. Fernando describes her as a fighter and a source of daily inspiration, while the family emphasizes that MS is something she battles, not something that defines her.

That message lines up with the family’s longer public involvement in MS fundraising. A National MS Society page tied to Mendoza’s advocacy says he previously launched the “Mendoza Brothers’ Fight Against MS,” and the organization reported earlier this year that the family’s efforts had already raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So the new fund is not a one-off draft-week gesture. It looks more like an expansion of work the family was already doing, now with a bigger platform and broader structure.

That context matters because it changes how fans should read the announcement. This is not Mendoza attaching himself to a cause for optics. It is a cause that was already central to his family before he reached the doorstep of the NFL.

What the timing says about Mendoza before the NFL Draft

Even without forcing football into every paragraph, the draft angle is still relevant. Mendoza is one of the biggest names in this class and widely expected to be drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders No. 1 overall, and the days before the draft are usually dominated by speculation, projections, and franchise talk. By choosing this moment to spotlight the fund, he shifted some of that attention toward something personal and lasting.

It also fits with the reason he is staying home for draft night rather than attending in person. The decision already suggested he wanted the moment shared closely with the people most important to him. This announcement reinforced that.

For fans and future NFL observers, that does not tell you how Mendoza will play on Sundays. But it does tell you something about what he wanted attached to his name before his pro career officially begins.
