The Los Angeles Chargers requested an interview with a member of the Patriots coaching staff

The New England Patriots selected Illinois edge rusher Gabe Jacas with the 55^th overall pick in April’s draft. The team made it a point to get the edge rusher, and now we are learning reasons why. This was reported by the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.

The Patriots pulled of off a trade with the Los Angeles Chargers. The Patriots received the 55^th overall pick in exchange for the 63^rd overall pick, the 131^st overall pick, and the 202^nd overall pick. It was an aggressive move for a Patriots team that wanted to focus on getting impact players.

They certainly did that in Jacas. The latter recorded 11 sacks and 43 tackles over the span of 12 games. He also added 13.5 tackles for loss. He played with intensity on the field. That intensity was evident pulled at the collegiate level.  It is part of the reason why the Patriots drafted him. Jacas’s former college coach Brett Bielema attested to his former player’s dedication to learning the game.

“Gabe Jacas would talk about pass rush for literally 20 hours a day. He would love to do it. He’s just consumed by it.”

Patriots Rookie Made Instant College Impact

The linebacker was consistent from the moment he stepped on the field. The playmaker recorded over 50 games played at Illinois. He recorded 183 total tackles and 35.5 tackles for loss. In addition, he also showed a penchant for getting after the quarterback. He logged 142 quarterback pressures, including 27 sacks, 31 hits, and 83 hurries. His intensity and ability to find the football also paid dividends in other ways. Jacas recorded seven forced fumbles and recovered one fumble throughout his collegiate career.

Impact quickly, as he prayed in 13 games in 2022. The freshman made eight starts and recorded five tackles for loss and four sacks. He was the recipient of Freshman All-American honors that year. Jack has held steady in 2024, as he tallied four sacks on the year. Although this production was not plentiful that year, it set the table for a strong junior season in 2024.

The 2024 campaign saw him record eight sacks and three forced fumbles. The forced fumbles were tied for the conference lead. It’s worth noting that the Michigan game was a high point for him. He recorded 13 tackles, 2.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in that contest.

It’s easy to see where his high motor came from, as it translated on the field well. It’s probably part of the reason why the Patriots were so ecstatic to take him. His football acumen, as well as his on-field results, match up well. It also explains why the Patriots were so aggressive in their pursuit of him.

Jacas Can Help Patriots Right Away

The Patriots needed additional edge-rushing help, and they got it. K’Lavon Chiasson went to the Washington Commanders this offseason, leaving a hole in that area. The Patriots were able to sign Dre’Mont Jones from the Baltimore Ravens. However, there was still depth that needed to be filled. Jacas should develop to be able to fill that role. Time will tell if it can actually happen. He has all the tools to do so. It’s just about making the most of his opportunities.
