The Green Bay Packers chose not to select a quarterback in the 2026 NFL Draft. That was a surprise to many after Malik Willis left town in NFL free agency to sign with the Miami Dolphins.
Over the last two years, Willis has been an elite backup behind Jordan Love. He has been called upon to play meaningful football in each of those two seasons. Now, the Packers have a question mark behind Love.
Currently, Green Bay has a few potential backup options on the roster. The battle right now would come down to Desmond Ridder, Kyle McCord, and Kyron Drones.
All three of those signal callers are good qualities to them. Unfortunately, none of them are ideal candidates to back up Love on a Super Bowl contending team.
Keeping that in mind, the Packers have been named a potential contender to sign a 10-time Pro Bowl quarterback late in NFL free agency.
Dharya Sharma of The Sporting News has named Wilson as a free agent Green Bay should target this offseason.
“Though Wilson is way past his prime, the 37-year-old has over a decade of starting experience and would be a solid backup behind Love,” Sharma wrote. “Wilson should also be fairly cheap to sign, and at this point in the offseason, he’s the best option to be Green Bay’s No. 2 signal-caller.”
At the end of the day, the Packers can’t afford to have a question mark at quarterback. If they are truly going to be a Super Bowl caliber football team, they need to protect themselves against a potential Love injury.
Even if Love were to miss time early in the season, Green Bay can’t afford to get behind in a stacked NFC North division race. Wilson could at least step in and help keep them afloat.
No one will say that Wilson should be a full-time starting quarterback. In a backup role, however, he would be more than capable of making spot starts.
During the 2025 NFL season with the New York Giants, the 37-year-old quarterback played in six games. He completed 58 percent of his pass attempts for 831 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also running for 106 yards.
Back in 2024 with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wilson played in 11 games. He threw for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Wilson completed 63.7 percent of his passes.
It’s possible that Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ front office feel comfortable with their current quarterback room. But, if there is any doubt at all, Wilson would be worth taking a flier on.
