The New York Jets are looking to close the deal.
Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson revealed that the Jets “offered” him a contract.
“It was great. They offered me, and I’m trying to figure out what’s the next best thing to do and all that. I still know I can play ball and do that on a high level, but also I think the opportunity to do TV too is great. So we’ll see what happens,” Wilson told the New York Post.

If Wilson accepted the contract offer from the Jets, he would be the new backup quarterback to Geno Smith.
It would be an interesting twist of fate. In 2019, Smith joined the Seattle Seahawks as a backup QB to Wilson. Fast forward seven years, and the roles could be reversed with Wilson now backing up Smith in New York.
“Geno is a great guy. We have been great friends and great teammates. I’m just focused on today,” Wilson told the New York Post.
They were teammates for three seasons in Seattle from 2019 through 2021.
With the Jets’ contract offer now being public information, the world knows that Wilson has a decision to make.
On one hand, he could continue his 14-year NFL career with the Jets in 2026. Or he could try his hand full-time as a television NFL analyst.
“Russell Wilson is in deep discussions to go into television, which could mark the end of what is likely a Hall of Fame career as an NFL quarterback,” sources briefed on the talks told The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand. “The NFL Today,’ CBS’ Sunday pregame show, is considered the favorite as the two sides have had lengthy talks, the sources said.”
Wilson was asked about his interest in a career in TV as an analyst.
“There is a lot of great networks and a lot of things. Obviously, it’s a great opportunity for me, and we’ll see what happens. I’m excited, I just love football, I love ball, I love being in it in every way, staying ready to play too, and every day I’m training and getting ready. I think I have a lot of great opportunities. The great news is there’s a lot I could do. You know, playing 14+ years has been amazing for me, and I’m just grateful that I get to do what I love to do,” Wilson told the New York Post.
If the Super Bowl champion quarterback goes into TV, that’ll leave the Jets with minimal options left on the open market.
Wilson is easily the most decorated quarterback available at this stage of the offseason, excluding the bizarre Aaron Rodgers saga on a year-to-year basis.
Shortly after the Jets traded for Smith, the front office asked him for his preferences on who he wanted as a backup. One of the names that he pounded the table for was Wilson.
Head coach Aaron Glenn needs a reliable break-the-glass emergency just in case Smith goes down with an injury in 2026.
