Ravens' general manager Eric DeCosta kept it real when discussing the team's failed Maxx Crosby trade

The Baltimore Ravens were one of the more active teams during the 2026 NFL Draft, as they brought 11 new players to town when all was said and done. It’s safe to say the event looked quite different from what many folks expected it would look just a few weeks ago, thanks in large part to a blockbuster trade with the Las Vegas Raiders for superstar defensive lineman Maxx Crosby falling apart.

Initially, Baltimore was set to give up a pair of first-round picks in the 2026 and 2027 drafts for Crosby. A failed physical resulted in the Ravens pulling out of the deal, meaning they kept the No. 14 overall pick, which was used on Penn State Nittany Lions offensive lineman Olaivavega Ioane. With the draft now in the books, general manager Eric DeCosta looked back on his team’s controversial decision to kill the trade for Crosby at the last second.

In a lot of ways, the Ravens’ controversial handling of their trade for Crosby has shaped the NFL offseason. On the surface, of course, one of the league’s best pass rushers was set to be on the move, but instead, he decided to recommit himself to the Raiders. Really, though, it’s what Baltimore has done in the wake of this failed move that has turned heads.

Immediately after backing out of the deal for Crosby, the Ravens turned around and signed Trey Hendrickson to a four-year, $112 million contract. With the No. 14 pick in tow, Baltimore was able to draft Ioane, who will help play a role in replacing Tyler Linderbaum, who coincidentally signed with the Raiders in free agency. DeCosta and company also selected Missouri Tigers defensive lineman Zion Young, which may not have happened had Crosby been in town.

All that goes to show that, had Crosby wound up with the Ravens, the 2026 draft would have looked very different for this team. Instead, DeCosta brought 11 new faces to town that will be tasked with helping Baltimore get over the hump and win a Super Bowl next year. DeCosta knows that he has faced a lot of backlash for his handling of the Crosby saga, but he believes that the rest of the league has finally put it in the rearview mirror.

“You have to move forward quickly in this business, and here we are,” DeCosta said when looking back on the Crosby trade, per Michael Silver of The Athletic. “This is what we’re known for. This is the Ravens’ DNA — the draft — and we’re ready to get this thing done.”

Crosby is one of the most disruptive defensive players in the league currently, but issues pertaining to a knee injury he underwent surgery for earlier this offseason spooked the Ravens. For all intents and purposes, Crosby appears to be on track to take the field in Week 1 for Las Vegas, and assuming he plays, he will be intent on making Baltimore look like fools for not pulling the trigger on this deal.

Signing Hendrickson will ensure that the Ravens still get a boost to their pass-rushing department, and Young is a talented prospect who could make an immediate impact. Trading for Crosby would have been nice, but if the injury concerns surrounding him are legit, it will be tough to argue with Baltimore’s decision to blow up this deal, regardless of how controversial it may have been.
