Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff made news during Game 1 of Pistons-Cavaliers when the Pistons announced on X that he was sitting courtside at Little Caesars Arena.

The Pistons posted a photo of Goff from the game and tagged the Lions, writing, “#OnePride is in the building!” The post came during a major night for Detroit sports, with the Pistons hosting the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

It was a simple courtside moment, but it carried a little more weight because of where Detroit sports are right now. Goff has become one of the most recognizable athletes in the city, and the Pistons are playing their deepest postseason basketball in years.

Cavaliers-Pistons Game 1 for May 5 started at 7 p.m. ET in Little Caesars Arena. Game 2 is also scheduled for Detroit on May 7 before the series shifts to Cleveland for Games 3 and 4.

Lions QB Jared Goff Sat Courtside at Game 1 of Pistons-Cavaliers in Detroit

Goff’s appearance gave the Pistons a Detroit sports crossover moment during their second-round opener.

That is not unusual for a playoff setting, but it fits the way Goff has been embraced locally since arriving in Detroit. The Lions quarterback has gone from part of a franchise-altering trade to one of the faces of the team’s climb, and his presence at a Pistons playoff game was another sign of his place in the city’s sports scene.

The timing also helped. The Pistons entered the series after a dramatic first-round win over the Orlando Magic. The Cavaliers reached the second round after a seven-game series against the Toronto Raptors, according to Axios Cleveland.

That made Game 1 more than a routine postseason matchup. It was the start of a second-round series between two Central Division teams, with Detroit trying to keep its playoff surge going in front of its home crowd.

For Lions fans, Goff’s appearance also landed during the quieter part of the NFL calendar. Detroit’s offseason program has begun, but the team is still weeks away from organized team activities. That gave Goff a natural opening to show up courtside before the Lions move deeper into their spring football schedule.

The Pistons’ post leaned into the connection by using the Lions’ “One Pride” slogan. It was a smart local touch, and a reminder that Goff remains one of the most visible figures in Detroit sports even when football is out of season.

Detroit Lions Schedule

The Lions’ full 2026 regular-season schedule has not been released yet, but their opponents are set.

Detroit will play its NFC North rivals — the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings — once at home and once on the road. The Lions will also face the NFC South and AFC East as part of the NFL’s rotating schedule format. Because Detroit finished fourth in the NFC North, the Lions also drew the fourth-place teams from the AFC South, NFC East and NFC West: the Tennessee Titans, New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals.

The Lions’ home opponents are the Bears, Packers, Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Titans and Giants. Their road opponents are the Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Bears, Packers, Miami Dolphins, Vikings and Cardinals.

Detroit also has an international game coming in 2026. The Lions announced in February that they will play a regular-season game at FC Bayern Munich Stadium, with the opponent, date and kickoff time to be announced as part of the NFL’s broader schedule release.

Before then, the Lions have their spring workout calendar.

The NFL announced that Detroit’s offseason program began April 20. The Lions’ OTA workouts are scheduled for May 27-29, June 2-4 and June 9-11, with mandatory minicamp set for June 16-17.

That puts Goff’s courtside Pistons appearance in a natural window. The Lions are not yet in mandatory team work, the Pistons are hosting a second-round playoff series, and one of Detroit’s biggest football names was there for the moment.

For the Pistons, it was a little extra star power during a major playoff night. For the Lions, it was another reminder that Goff remains front and center in Detroit, even from the front row at a basketball game.
