Bills WR named player to watch.

The Buffalo Bills had a focus on adding to the wide receiver room this offseason, and the team did just that.

Buffalo traded for DJ Moore to be the team’s No. 1 receiver, and the Bills drafted Skyler Bell in the fourth round. Yet, the team also added some more receivers as undrafted free agents, and one speedster is named as a player to watch.

The Bills signed Max Tomczak as a UDFA, and NFL analyst Nick Baumgardner of The Athletic named him a player to watch ahead of camp.

“A small Z/slot receiver with potential as a kick/punt returner, Tomczak ran one of the fastest short shuttles (4.01 seconds) of any player in the draft class. The 5-foot-11, 193-pounder had more than 3,000 career receiving yards at Youngstown State, including 70 catches for 1,021 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025,” Baumgardner wrote.

Tomczak played four years at Youngstown State, but had the best year of his career last season. He was an impactful slot receiver and can also chip in on special teams and be a kick and punt returner, which is something the Bills need.

Buffalo doesn’t have a clear frontrunner to be the team’s kick or punt returner, so Tomczak could earn a roster spot that way. Regardless, the Bills’ wide receiver room is wide open, and he could make an impact at OTAs and training camp.

Tomczak Considered Most Likely UDFA to Make Bills Roster

Although the Bills have a Super Bowl-contending roster, undrafted free agents can still earn their way onto the 53-man roster.

After the NFL Draft and undrafted free agent signings, NFL analyst Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report named Tomczak the most likely UDFA to make the Bills roster.

“The Buffalo Bills made an effort to address their lack of receiver depth, trading for D.J. Moore and using a fourth-round pick on UConn’s Skyler Bell,” Knox wrote. “While Buffalo insists that it’s keeping disappointing 2024 second-round pick Keon Coleman, it may still have room for Max Tomczak. …

“With a 6’0″, 195-pound frame and a 7.89 relative athletic score (RAS), Tomczak has the combination of size and physical traits to be a solid possession receiver at the pro level.”

Tomczak also drew rave reviews from ESPN NFL analyst Mel Kiper Jr. in the lead-up to the NFL Draft.

“Tomczak is a nuanced route runner, and he recognizes different coverages well,” Kiper Jr. wrote. “He adjusts on the ball in the air and then has the hands to secure it. And I see the versatility to play outside or inside—and return punts.”

However, Tomczak will need to have a good training camp to earn a roster spot.

GM Explains Decision to Trade for Moore

The Bills’ big move of the offseason was trading for DJ Moore.

Moore is an impact receiver, and general manager Brandon Beane felt like he fit Buffalo’s roster the best.

“I thought DJ, he’s a guy we followed all the way back from the draft process. A guy I checked into at the trade deadline last year,” Beane told Tyler Dunne of Go Long on Thursday. “And of course when you’re looking at options and you’re talking through, Joe Brady quickly reminds you, ‘Yeah, he had one of his better years with me in Carolina.’

“He really loved DJ. So he knows his makeup, his wiring even better than I know it to be because mine is from what I understand of him and from the people I know in Carolina and from the people through the draft process at Maryland.”

Moore recorded 50 receptions for 682 yards and 6 touchdowns last season.
