Former New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia is bullish about the state of the team’s offensive line heading into 2026. As a matter of fact, he has high praise for the unit.

Scarnecchia knows a thing or two about solid offensive line play. He was with the Patriots for decades and helped put together strong offensive lines during the Tom Brady years. He was recognized for his work with the organization in 2023, when he was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Patriots Legend Likes What He Sees

Now, he is looking into the future. It’s safe to say that he likes what he sees. The Boston Globe’s Christopher Price reported this.

“One thing that seems to me is that they are probably as talented as they’ve been in a long time up front — potentially talented,” he said. “You have two guys who were first-round draft choices. [Jared] Wilson was a third-rounder. Crownover looks talented.“

But there’s a lot of things that need to get settled down and worked on. They have the spring and the preseason games to get it all resolved, but I suspect they will. Doug Marrone is a really good line coach. He’ll have them ready.”

Scarnecchia Made Living As O-Line Guru

Scarnecchia had a long and decorated career with the Patriots organization. He first began his stints with the Patriots on two separate occasions. He coached with the organization from 1982-1998, and from 1991 to 1998. During that time, he was able to take on various roles such as tight ends coach, special-teams coach, and defensive assistant.

He was officially named offensive line coach in 1999. This was during Pete Carroll’s final season. His continuity continued in 2000 under Bill Belichick, as he was named assistant head coach as well as offensive line coach. He held both those titles until the 2013 season, when he retired the first time around.

Retirement didn’t last very long, as he was brought back in 2016. At that point in time, the Patriots’ offensive line was struggling in the 2015 campaign. Scarnecchia was able to write the ship quickly, as they allowed only 16 sacks. By comparison, the line allowed 38 in 2015. The success was felt on the field for the rest of the team as well. The Patriots were able to make three more Super Bowl appearances. They went on to win two of those appearances, as the organization fully cemented itself as one of the greatest organizations in professional sports.

Scarnecchia retired for a final time in the 2020 season. Nevertheless, his career accolades spoke for themselves, and it became clear early on that he was an offensive line wizard. This is why his praise definitely looms large for this current group. Time will tell with results on the field. However, the Patriots certainly have a solid base from which to work. Patriots started to rookies on the offensive line last year in Will Campbell and Wilson. An additional year of experience is going to do them wonders. Couple that with the draft selections of Caleb Lomu and Crownover, and Marrone certainly has a lot to work with.
