With the 2026 NFL Draft in the rear view mirror, the veteran free agent market could start to heat up in the coming weeks as the Minnesota Vikings appear to be in the market for a player who can fill that WR3 role.

After Jalen Nailor left in free agency, the Vikings didn’t draft a wide receiver, and all signs point to Minnesota going the veteran route. On April 28, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported, citing a source, that San Francisco 49ers free-agent wide receiver Jauan Jennings visited the Vikings on April 28 and April 29.

Nonetheless, Minnesota has been in the speculation mill over the last few weeks with different veteran wideouts, including one with a history with the Vikings: Stefon Diggs. However, The Team 980’s Kevin Sheehan believes the Washington Commanders should be eyeing Diggs.

“He can be a pain in the a–, but nobody is readier on game day and gives you everything he has like he does,” Sheehan said in an April 28 video. “The thing about Stefon Diggs that everybody’s always said about him is, deep down, big-time heart. He means well, just a little bit of wide receiver diva-ness.

“Not just a little bit, but a lot of it at times, especially if he’s not getting the ball. But in [the Commanders’] offense, he’d get the ball. Diggs, on some level, just because I think it’s a crazy you know versus a crazy you don’t know, is attractive to me.”

Could the Vikings Reunite With Stefon Diggs?

With the trade of Jonathan Greenard, Minnesota has roughly $16 million in cap space, per OverTheCap. As a result, with the Vikings having a little more money to spend, Bleacher Report’s Joseph Zucker believes the Vikings should be one of the teams looking to land the veteran free-agent receiver.

“Would one of Diggs’ old teams consider a reunion?” Zucker wrote in his April 25 article. “Jordan Addison has yet to make a true breakthrough with the Minnesota Vikings. The team’s depth really falls off once you get past him and Justin Jefferson as well.

“The Vikings have one quarterback on a one-year contract (Kyler Murray) and another who may be heading into a make-or-break season (J.J. McCarthy). Bringing Diggs back to Minneapolis has some merit.”

Minnesota Gets Another Take Involving Stefon Diggs

Moreover, CBS Sports’ Garrett Podell also sees Diggs as a potential option for the Vikings, should the player clear up his legal problems.

“Diggs’ legal trouble is likely why he remains available,” Podell wrote in his CBS Sports article published on April 3. “He pleaded not guilty to felony strangulation and other criminal charges following an alleged assault of his personal chef. Diggs’ attorney, Mitchell Schuster, claims his client is ‘completely innocent.’ 

“If Diggs’ legal process is resolved, a homecoming to the Minnesota Vikings makes plenty of sense. Jalen Nailor departed for the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, so there’s an opening at Minnesota’s WR3 spot after 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year Justin Jefferson and former first-round pick Jordan Addison.”

Last season with the New England Patriots, Diggs turned in an 87.5 overall PFF grade, placing him sixth among 81 qualifying wide receivers. His 87.5 receiving grade ranked seventh in that same group.

He finished with 85 catches on 100 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 11.9 yards per reception. He added 363 yards after the catch, was credited with two drops, and had an average depth of target of 8.7 yards.
