The Miami Dolphins may lose a veteran cornerback in free agency

As presently constructed, the Miami Dolphins secondary is among the weakest units on the team. 

Entering training camp, that was also the case last season, which prompted the team to sign veterans Jack Jones Jr. and Rasul Douglas. Both cornerbacks ended up becoming significant contributors.

Jones then left in free agency, signing with the San Francisco 49ers, while Douglas remains a free agent. Douglas, who was likely Miami’s best cornerback last season, has now been predicted to join former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores with the Minnesota Vikings.

Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante predicted landing spots for 25 of the best remaining free agents. Among them was former Miami Dolphins cornerback Rasul Douglas, who Infante predicted would sign with the Vikings. Infante wrote:

“The Dolphins needed a stopgap starting option at cornerback last year, and Rasul Douglas filled that role admirably. He had two interceptions and ranked No. 15 in the league in PFSN’s CB Impact Scoring at 84.3. He’ll be 31 in August, so he’s hardly a long-term solution for any team, but he should get the chance to battle for a starting role.”

In 15 games played for the Dolphins, he graded as a top-20 cornerback in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. On a one-year deal worth $1.5 million, Douglas was called “the best defensive bargain in football” by Fox Sports announcer Greg Olsen.

Unfortunately for the Dolphins, that bargain is over and the 31-year-old cornerback is a free agent. Last offseason, Douglas rejected several offers from the Dolphins as he hoped to get a better deal prior to the season; however, he ended up signing with the team a week before the season opener. Despite remaining unsigned, a reunion between Douglas and the Dolphins may still be possible, as a fan told him on X that he would love to see him back in Miami, Douglas replied, “Hopefully.” The former Super Bowl champion impressed in his one season in Miami and could provide a solid veteran presence alongside first-round pick Chris Johnson.

After emerging as one of the Dolphins’ top defensive playmakers last season, losing Douglas would be a significant blow to Miami’s secondary. If he were to return, Douglas could work on the outside next to Chris Johnson, who is arriving with high expectations after being selected in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Johnson, who was the No. 35-ranked prospect by NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah, was the second cornerback selected in the draft. Regarding Johnson, Jeremiah wrote:

“Johnson has excellent height, bulk and movement skills for his position. In press coverage, he doesn’t use his hands to reroute the receiver, but he has very quick feet and he’s fluid to open up/run. He will mix in some bail technique, where he’ll turn his back toward the sideline, run and stay on top of wideouts. He’s at his best in off coverage, where he shows excellent eyes/instincts to trigger on throws in front of him. He’s natural in finding and playing the ball. Johnson is extremely tough and aggressive to fill versus the run. He’s a dependable tackler in space and he flashes burst/closing ability as a blitzer. He had an up-and-down week at the Senior Bowl, but he rebounded with an outstanding NFL Scouting Combine performance. Coaches at SDSU rave about his character and toughness.”
