Eagles Hit With Brutal Hidden Schedule Disadvantage By NFL

The NFL Schedule Release 2026 is almost here, and every NFL team is expected to have an official video to accompany theirs. We'll track them all here.

The Philadelphia Eagles already knew their 2026 schedule would come with plenty of challenges. A brutal stretch of opponents, another international trip and several primetime battles immediately jumped off the page once the NFL officially released the slate.

But after taking a deeper dive into the schedule, another issue quickly became a major talking point among Eagles fans. The issue is that Philadelphia will face four different teams coming off bye weeks this season, tied for the most in the NFL.

At first glance, that sounds like a massive disadvantage for a team hoping to make another Super Bowl run. Fresh legs, extra preparation time and additional recovery days certainly seem like factors that could swing close games.

NFL schedule makers hate the Eagles part 2.

– Eagles play the most teams coming off bye weeks. – They have the 2nd worst rest differential – Not getting bye after London game like usual

Jordan Mailata on the last part:

“Woooh we’re cooked” 😂

#Eagles

However, as FOX Sports noted, according to the NFL research and analytics department, the numbers tell a very different story.

Eagles Draw One of NFL’s Toughest Rest Disadvantages

Philadelphia is one of just two teams, alongside the Los Angeles Chargers, scheduled to face four opponents coming off their bye weeks in 2026.

The Eagles will see the Carolina Panthers in Week 6, the Washington Commanders in Week 8, the New York Giants in Week 9 and the Indianapolis Colts in Week 14, all with those teams entering the matchup extra rested and with additional prep time.

The scheduling quirk becomes even more frustrating when considering some of the surrounding circumstances. Carolina gets Philadelphia immediately after the Eagles return from their London trip, while Washington catches the Eagles after a physical Monday Night Football showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants then benefit from extra preparation the following week.

For Eagles fans, it feels like another example of the league quietly making life more difficult for one of the NFC’s premier contenders.

The concern is understandable. In a league built around razor-thin margins, even a slight advantage can feel magnified. Teams obsess over recovery, preparation and injury management throughout the season. Having multiple opponents gain extra time to heal and game-plan naturally poses a disadvantage.

NFL Says Bye Week “Advantage” Is Basically A Myth

Despite the perception surrounding rest disparity, the NFL insists the numbers simply do not support the idea that teams gain a meaningful advantage from extra rest.

NFL vice president of broadcast planning Mike North addressed the issue shortly after the schedule release and revealed the league has spent years studying the impact of rest disparities.

“We’ve got a really robust data and analytics team here in the office,” North said. “They have been very clear with us that rest disparity is not a thing.”

The data backs up the league’s stance.

Over the past two NFL seasons, teams coming off bye weeks against opponents without one have gone exactly 27-27. In 2025, those teams went 14-12. In 2024, they went 13-15.

The NFL also pointed to broader historical trends.

According to Sumer Sports, 18 of the 28 teams with the most extreme rest disadvantages since 2002 still exceeded their projected win totals. That included the 2023 San Francisco 49ers, who overcame one of the league’s worst rest disparities before reaching the Super Bowl.

The biggest reason for the shift may actually stem from the NFL’s current collective bargaining agreement. Since players are now required to receive four consecutive days off during bye weeks, coaches no longer gain nearly as much additional practice time as they once did.

Research conducted by NFL analysts Mike Lopez and Tom Bliss estimated the modern bye-week edge at only 0.3 points per game, which is essentially negligible.

That probably will not stop Eagles fans from circling the issue throughout the season. But if Philadelphia truly is a championship-caliber team again in 2026, the NFL believes the schedule quirk ultimately will not matter nearly as much as people think.
