The Chicago Bears checked several boxes during the 2026 NFL Draft, but one major need still stands out: edge rusher.

Despite adding talent in the secondary and continuing to build around Caleb Williams on offense, Chicago did not make a significant move to upgrade its pass rush. That has led to growing buzz around a logical post-draft target.

Veteran five-time Pro Bowler Joey Bosa is emerging as a name to watch.

One recent projection pointed directly to that fit.

With the draft complete, attention has shifted to the remaining free-agent market.  Bosa currently stands out as one of the most accomplished options still available.

“The biggest reason Chicago could look at Bosa is simple: the Bears still need more juice off the edge,” the analysis stated.

That need is backed up by the numbers.

Chicago finished the 2025 season with just 35 sacks and 126 total pressures, production that falls short of what playoff-level defenses typically generate. Even after a strong offseason focused on the back end, the front still lacks a consistent second threat opposite Montez Sweat.

Bosa, even at this stage of his career, brings immediate credibility.

Since entering the league in 2016, he has totaled 77 career sacks and has consistently been one of the more disruptive edge defenders when healthy.

He is no longer expected to carry a full workload. However, that may actually make him a better fit.

As the piece noted, “He does not need to come in and be a 900-snap defensive centerpiece,” instead thriving in “high-leverage situations” like third downs and late-game pass-rush scenarios.

Fit Alongside Montez Sweat Makes Sense for Bears

The potential pairing is what makes this projection particularly intriguing.

Chicago already has a proven edge presence in Sweat, but offenses were often able to key in on him without a consistent threat on the opposite side. Adding Bosa would change that dynamic immediately.

“Pairing him up opposite Bosa would be essential for Chicago,” the report noted, highlighting how the veteran could complement Sweat while also elevating the entire defensive front.

Bosa is also coming off a productive 2025 season with the Buffalo Bills, where he recorded five sacks and five forced fumbles. That kind of impact, even in a rotational role, would give the Bears a situational weapon they currently lack.

Beyond the production, there is also a leadership component. Bosa’s experience in big games and understanding of pass-rush technique could benefit younger players like Austin Booker, helping accelerate development across the unit.

Chicago has made clear strides this offseason, particularly in the secondary with additions like Coby Bryant, Dillon Thieneman, and Malik Muhammad. But if the Bears are serious about taking the next step in 2026, the pass rush still needs addressing.

Adding a proven name like Bosa would be a clear signal that they are ready to make that leap.
