Texans Beat Rush for Polarizing Selection in 2026 Draft

Houston Texans general manager Nick Caserio's aggressiveness was well-placed with Keylan Rutledge.

To the surprise of some, the Houston Texans traded up in the first round of the 2026 draft to select Georgia Tech’s Keylan Rutledge. His selection is a continuation of an overhaul along the Texans’ offensive line that has persisted for two offseasons.

The surprise runs deeper than just those who were spectators during the draft.

There was other interest in the mauling offensive lineman, which helps explain Texans general manager Nick Caserio’s decision to swing a trade.

Texans Outmaneuvered Rivals for Keylan Rutledge

The Texans moved up two slots from 28th to 26th overall to select Rutledge, whom The Athletic’s Dane Brugler said he likes more as a selection in the aftermath. Houston’s aggressiveness was for good reason.

“I liked the Keylan Rutledge pick, especially after talking to other teams that were not happy he went before they could get him,” Brugler wrote on April 27.

Brugler noted that his “favorite pick” was second-round defensive tackle Kayden McDonald.

However, the Texans have thrived without a defensive lineman of his stature, ranking fourth against the run this past season. Their offensive line turnover has been due to a lack of the kind of players they hope Rutledge will become.

Still, both players project to get opportunities to crack the Texans’ starting lineup in relatively short order.

“Houston’s first- and second-round picks have mostly started in Week 1 in recent years,” ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime wrote on April 27. “Since 2023, Houston has drafted tackles Blake Fisher and Aireontae Ersery, along with guard Juice Scruggs, wideout Jayden Higgins, quarterback C.J. Stroud, defensive end Will Anderson and cornerback Kamari Lassiter. Over that span, only Fisher and Scruggs weren’t immediate starters, largely because Scruggs was injured and Fisher was behind two tackles on high-priced contracts at the time.”

If McDonald and Rugledge play like the steals they are being celebrated as, the Texans did well.

Texans Get Promising Feedback on Day 3 Pick

The praise for the work the Texans did in their trenches in the draft did not stop with McDonald and Rutledge, as Brugler highlighted fourth-round selection Febechi Nwaiwu as a “Day 3 pick who could surprise.”

“Nwaiwu is underwhelming as an athlete, but he more than makes up for it with his intelligence and play strength,” Brugler said in the blurb on Nwaiwu. “He logged starts at four of the five offensive line positions in college, and he counts as another step in the right direction as the Texans look to solidify their line.”

According to NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein, the Texans drafted Nwaiwu in the proper range as a fourth-round selection.

Zierlein called Nwaiwu “reliably active with good length.”

“After a bumpy first season with the Sooners in 2024, he displayed improvement in both phases. He centers opponents in front of him to stay connected and uses good technique to displace down-block targets,” Zierlein wrote.

“However, he is inconsistent finding his foe on move blocks. Chronic leaning and slow initial hand strikes can render his massive wingspan useless against two-gappers and in pass protection. Nwaiwu’s snaps at center offer a peek into what might be his best spot, but his position flexibility is a positive regardless.”
