The San Francisco 49ers are watching another wide receiver storyline develop from a distance.

Former 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings is reportedly visiting the Minnesota Vikings, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The visit is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, giving Jennings a possible NFC landing spot after a long stretch on the free-agent market.

Jennings is no longer under contract with San Francisco, so this is not a case of the 49ers actively losing a player from their current roster. But it still matters because Jennings had become a meaningful part of the offense before hitting free agency. He appeared in 75 games over five seasons with the 49ers and started 25 games over the past two years.

The 28-year-old also gave San Francisco a specific kind of receiver. Jennings was not just a depth target. He was a physical, competitive possession receiver who could work through traffic, block in the run game and give the offense a reliable option in difficult downs.

That is why the Vikings visit is notable for 49ers fans, even if Jennings’ exit has already been expected.

Jauan Jennings Could Fill a Clear Vikings Need

Minnesota’s interest is easy to understand.

The Vikings have Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison at the top of the depth chart, but the team did not select a wide receiver in the 2026 NFL Draft. That leaves room for a veteran addition who would not need to be the No. 1 or No. 2 option in the offense.

Jennings fits that profile. He caught 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns in 2024, then followed with 55 receptions for 643 yards and a career-high nine touchdowns this past season.

For Minnesota, Jennings could become a chain-moving third receiver next to Jefferson and Addison. For Jennings, the Vikings could offer a defined offensive role and a chance to rebuild value after his market lingered longer than expected.

Niners Nation reported that Jennings was likely looking at a one-year deal worth around $8 million with heavy incentives. The same outlet also noted that Miami had shown interest before the Vikings emerged as another possible destination.

That price point helps explain why Jennings remained unsigned this deep into the offseason. He has real value, but he also appears to be looking for more than a minimum-level deal.

Jennings Leaves Behind a Specific 49ers Role

Jennings’ likely departure forces the 49ers to replace more than box-score production.

San Francisco has built much of its offensive identity around versatility, toughness and yards after the catch. Jennings fit that style because he was willing to play a physical game without needing the ball constantly.

That kind of player can be easy to underestimate until he is gone. The 49ers can find receiving production elsewhere, but replacing Jennings’ size, blocking and third-down usefulness is a more specific challenge.

This is also why the Vikings make sense. Jennings would not have to become Jefferson or Addison. He could be the complementary piece who gives Minnesota a sturdier option underneath and in contested situations.

Brandon Aiyuk Situation Still Looms Over 49ers

Jennings’ visit comes while the 49ers continue to sort through the Brandon Aiyuk situation.

NBC Sports Bay Area’s Jennifer Lee Chan reported that general manager John Lynch said after the draft that San Francisco remains open to an Aiyuk trade. “We’re available. Give us a call,” Lynch told reporters.

That does not directly change Jennings’ status, but it does keep the 49ers’ receiver room in an unsettled place. Jennings appears headed elsewhere, and Aiyuk’s future remains unresolved.

For now, the Jennings visit is another reminder that San Francisco’s offense is moving into a different phase. The 49ers still have star power, but some of the familiar pieces around it are changing.
